- hold him:
- Do not consider him as an innocent man; for, as thou art a wise man, and knowest how to treat such persons, treat him as he deserves; only, as I have sworn to him that I would not put him to death, "bring not his hoar head down to the grave with blood." So Solomon understood David; for, after he had commanded Joab to be slain, in obedience to his father, he sent for Shimei, and knowing he ought to be well watched, he confined him to Jerusalem for the rest of his life, and so it appears David should be understood; for the negative particle lo, in the former clause, "hold him not guiltless," should be repeated in the latter clause, though not expressed; instances of which frequently occur in the Hebrew Scriptures. (See note on "Have they not¹ sped?ª° have they [not] dividedª° the prey;ª to everyª manª a damsel² [or] two;ª² to Siseraª a preyª of divers colours,ª a preyª of divers coloursª of needlework,ª of divers coloursª of needlework¹ on both sides,² [meet] for the necksª of [them that take] the spoil?ª" {Jdg 5:30} + "Talkª° no¹ moreª° so exceeding² proudly;ª let [not] arrogancyª come²° out¹ of your mouth:ª¹ for¹ the LORDª [is] a Godª of knowledge,ª and by him actionsª are weighed.ª°" {1Sm 2:3} + "Therefore¹¹ the ungodlyª shall not¹ standª° in the judgment,ª nor sinnersª in the congregationª of the righteous.ª" {Psa 1:5} + "For¹ the needyª shall not¹ alwayª be forgotten:ª° the expectationª of the poorª°² shall [not] perishª° for ever.ª" {Psa 9:18} + "[[A Psalmª of David,ª to bring to remembrance.]]ª° O LORD,ª rebukeª° me not¹ in thy wrath:ª neither chastenª° me in thy hot displeasure.ª" {Psa 38:1} + "Lift not upª°¹ your hornª on high:ª speakª° [not with] a stiffª neck.ª" {Psa 75:5} + "Let thy fountainsª be dispersedª° abroad,ª [and] riversª of watersª in the streets.ª" {Prv 5:16} + "If¹ thou sayest,ª° Behold,¹ we knewª° it¹ not;¹ doth not¹ he that ponderethª° the heart²¹ considerª° [it]? and he that keepethª° thy soul,ª doth [not] he¹ knowª° [it]? and shall [not] he renderª° to [every] manª according to his works?ª" {Prv 24:12}, etc). This is the view taken of the subject by Dr. Kennicott, and it seems the best and most correct mode of interpreting the text. "Thou shalt not¹ takeª°¹ the nameª of the LORDª thy Godª in vain;ª for¹ the LORDª will not¹ hold him guiltlessª°¹ that¹ takethª°¹ his nameª in vain.ª" {Exd 20:7} + "Thou shalt not¹ revileª° the gods,ª nor¹ curseª° the rulerª of thy people.ª" {Exd 22:28} + "I am afraidª° of all¹ my sorrows,ª I knowª° that¹ thou wilt not¹ hold me innocent.ª°" {Job 9:28}
