sleep:
"So Davidª sleptª ° with¹ his fathers,ª and was buriedª ° in the cityª of David.ª" {1Kg 2:10} + "And thou¹ shalt goª ° to¹ thy fathersª in peace;ª thou shalt be buriedª ° in a goodª old age.ª" {Gen 15:15} + "And the LORDª saidª ° unto¹ Moses,ª Behold,¹ thou shalt sleepª ° with¹ thy fathers;ª and this¹ peopleª will rise up,ª ° and go a whoringª ° afterª the godsª of the strangersª of the land,ª whither¹ ¹ they¹ goª ° [to be] amongª them, and will forsakeª ° me, and breakª °¹ my covenantª which¹ I have madeª ° with¹ them." {Deu 31:16}

that I:
That is, when Adonijah is established on the throne, I and my son Solomon shall be put to death as state criminals. The history of the world demonstrates, that the lust of dominion has tempted men to commit the most enormous crimes. A father has destroyed his son, a son deposed a father, and a brother murdered a brother, in order to obtain a crown!

offenders:
Heb. sinners, "And he said,ª ° Thou¹ knowestª ° that¹ the kingdomª was¹ mine, and [that] all¹ Israelª setª ° their facesª on¹ me, that I should reign:ª ° howbeit the kingdomª is turned about,ª ° and is become¹ my brother's:ª for¹ it was¹ his from the LORD.ª ¹" {1Kg 2:15} + "And kingª Solomonª answeredª ° and saidª ° unto his mother,ª And why¹ dost thou¹ askª °¹ Abishagª the Shunammiteª for Adonijah?ª askª ° for him¹ the kingdomª also; for¹ he¹ [is] mine¹ elderª brother;ª even for him, and for Abiatharª the priest,ª and for Joabª the sonª of Zeruiah.ª ... Now¹ therefore, [as] the LORDª liveth,ª which¹ hath establishedª ° me, and setª ° me on¹ the throneª of Davidª my father,ª and who¹ hath madeª ° me an house,ª as¹ he promised,ª ° Adonijahª shall be put to deathª ° this day.ª" {1Kg 2:22-24}
