- At this time the monarchy of Israel was unsettled; no man knew who was to succeed to the crown; and the minds of the people were as unsettled as the succession. It was neither hereditary nor elective. The king, as was anciently the case in most countries, named his successor; but in this instance, God had already assigned the throne to Solomon. "The Spiritª of the LORDª spakeª° by me, and his wordª [was] in¹ my tongue.ª" {2Sm 23:2} + "But the wordª of the LORDª came¹ to¹ me, saying,ª° Thou hast shedª° bloodª abundantly,ª and hast madeª° greatª wars:ª thou shalt not¹ buildª° an houseª unto my name,ª because¹ thou hast shedª° muchª bloodª upon the earthª in my sight.ª ... He¹ shall buildª° an houseª for my name;ª and he¹ shall be¹ my son,ª and I¹ [will be] his father;ª and I will establishª° the throneª of his kingdomª over¹ Israelª for² ever.ª¹" {1Ch 22:8-10} + "And of all¹¹ my sons,ª (for¹ the LORDª hath givenª° me manyª sons,)ª he hath chosenª° Solomonª my sonª to sitª° upon¹ the throneª of the kingdomª of the LORDª over¹ Israel.ª ... And he saidª° unto me, Solomonª thy son,ª he¹ shall buildª° my houseª and my courts:ª for¹ I have chosenª° him [to be] my son,ª and I¹ will be¹ his father.ª" {1Ch 28:5-6} + "Take heedª° now;¹ for¹ the LORDª hath chosenª° thee to buildª° an houseª for the sanctuary:ª be strong,ª° and doª° [it]." {1Ch 28:10} + "Furthermore Davidª the kingª saidª° unto all¹ the congregation,ª Solomonª my son,ª whom aloneª Godª hath chosen,ª° [is yet] youngª and tender,ª and the workª [is] great:ª for¹ the palaceª [is] not¹ for man,ª but¹ for the LORDª God.ª" {1Ch 29:1}
