again:
"Then there was¹ a famineª in the daysª of Davidª threeª years,ª yearª afterª year;ª and Davidª enquiredª°¹ of² the LORD.ª And the LORDª answered,ª° [It is] for¹ Saul,ª and for¹ [his] bloodyª house,ª because¹¹ he slewª°¹ the Gibeonites.ª ... And¹ the bonesª of Saulª and Jonathanª his sonª buriedª° they in the countryª of Benjaminª in Zelah,ª in the sepulchreª of Kishª his father:ª and they performedª° all¹ that¹ the kingª commanded.ª° And after² that¹¹ Godª was intreatedª° for the land.ª" {2Sm 21:1-14}
he:
This verse, when read without reference to any other part of the word of God, is very difficult to understand, and has been used by those who desire to undermine the justice of God, to shew that he sought occasion to punish - that he incited David to sin; and when he had so incited him, gave to him the dreadful alternative of choosing one of three scourges by which his people were to be cut off. On the face of the passage these thoughts naturally arise, because "the Lord" is the antecedent to the pronoun "he," - He moved David. But to those who "search the Scriptures," this exceedingly difficult passage receives a wonderful elucidation. By referring to "And Satanª stood upª° against¹ Israel,ª and provokedª°¹ Davidª to numberª°¹ Israel.ª" {1Ch 21:1}, the reader will there find that Satan was the mover, and that the Lord most righteously punished David for the display of pride he had manifested. Oh! that Christians, who sometimes have their minds harassed with doubts, would remember the promise, that what they know not now they shall know hereafter; and if no other instance of elucidation than this passage occurred to them to remove their doubts, let this be a means of stirring them up to dig deeper than ever into the inexhaustible mines of the Inspired Word. "Let²° no manª sayª° when he is tempted,ª°² I am temptedª° ofª God:ª forª Godª cannot be temptedªª° with evil,ª neitherª temptethª° he²²°¹ any man:ª ... Butª every manª is tempted,ª° when he is drawn awayª° ofª his ownª lust,ª andª enticed.ª°" {Jms 1:13-14}
moved:
"Thus¹ saithª° the LORD,ª Behold,¹ I will raise upª° evilª against¹ thee out of thine own house,ª¹ and I will takeª°¹ thy wivesª before thine eyes,ª and giveª° [them] unto thy neighbour,ª and he shall lieª° with¹ thy wivesª in the sightª of this¹ sun.ª" {2Sm 12:11} + "And the kingª said,ª° What¹ have I to do with you, ye sonsª of Zeruiah?ª so¹ let him curse,ª° because¹ the LORDª hath saidª° unto him, Curseª°¹ David.ª Who¹ shall then say,ª° Wherefore¹ hast thou done¹ so?²°¹" {2Sm 16:10} + "Now¹ therefore be not¹ grieved,ª° nor¹ angryª° with yourselves,ª that¹ ye soldª° me hither:¹ for¹ Godª did sendª° me before¹ you² to preserve life.ª" {Gen 45:5} + "But as for you,¹ ye thoughtª° evilª against¹ me; [but] Godª meant¹ it²° unto good,ª toª bring to pass,ª° as [it is] this¹ day,ª to save²° much² people² alive.ª°¹¹" {Gen 50:20} + "And I¹ will hardenª°¹ Pharaoh'sª heart,ª and multiplyª°¹ my signsª and my wondersª in the landª of Egypt.ª" {Exd 7:3} + "Now¹ therefore, I pray thee,¹ let my lordª the kingª hearª°¹ the wordsª of his servant.ª If¹ the LORDª have stirred thee upª° against me, let him acceptª° an offering:ª but if¹ [they be] the childrenª of men,ª cursedª° [be] they¹ beforeª the LORD;ª for¹ they have driven²° me out¹ this dayª from abidingª°¹ in the inheritanceª of the LORD,ª saying,ª° Go,²°¹ serveª° otherª gods.ª" {1Sm 26:19} + "And the LORDª said,ª° Who¹ shall persuadeª°¹ Ahab,ª that he may go upª° and fallª° at Ramothgilead?ª² And one¹ saidª° on this manner,ª and another¹ saidª° on that manner.ª ... Now¹ therefore, behold,¹ the LORDª hath putª° a lyingª spiritª in the mouthª of all¹ these¹ thy prophets,ª and the LORDª hath spokenª° evilª concerning¹ thee." {1Kg 22:20-23} + "And if¹ the prophetª be deceivedª° when he hath spokenª° a thing,ª I¹ the LORDª have deceivedª°¹ that¹ prophet,ª and I will stretch outª°¹ my handª upon¹ him, and will destroyª° him from the midstª¹ of my peopleª Israel.ª" {Ezk 14:9} + "Wherefore I¹ gaveª° them also¹ statutesª [that were] not¹ good,ª and judgmentsª whereby they should not¹ live;ª°" {Ezk 20:25} + "For to doª° whatsoeverª thyª handª andª thyª counselª determined beforeª° to be done.ª°" {Act 4:28} + "Andª for this² causeª¹ Godª shall sendª° themª strong² delusion,ª¹ that² theyª should believeª° a lie:ª" {2Th 2:11}
number:
"But Davidª tookª° not¹ the numberª of them from twenty² years² oldª¹¹¹ and under:ª because¹ the LORDª had saidª° he would increaseª°¹ Israelª like to the starsª of the heavens.ª ... Joabª the sonª of Zeruiahª beganª° to number,ª° but he finishedª° not,¹ because there fell¹ wrathª for itª against¹ Israel;ª neither¹ was the numberª putª° in the accountª of the chroniclesªª of kingª David.ª" {1Ch 27:23-24}
