- three:
- etc. or, the three captains over the thirty, "Now threeª of¹ the thirtyª captainsª went downª° to¹ the rockª to¹ David,ª into¹ the caveª of Adullam;ª and the hostª of the Philistinesª encampedª° in the valleyª of Rephaim.ª ... And said,ª° My Godª¹ forbid² it¹ me, that I should doª°¹ this thing:ª shall I drinkª° the bloodª of these¹ men²¹ that have put their lives¹ in jeopardy?² for¹ with [the jeopardy of] their livesª they broughtª° it. Therefore he wouldª° not¹ drinkª° it. These things¹ didª° these threeª mightiest.ª" {1Ch 11:15-19} Shalishim, "captains," should most probably be read, instead of shaloshim̀ thirty shalishim, as it is in "These¹ [be] the namesª of the mighty menª whom¹ Davidª had: The Tachmoniteª that satª° in the seat,ª°°² chiefª among the captains;ª the same¹ [was] Adinoª the Eznite:ª [he lift up his spear] against¹ eightª hundred,ª whom he slewª at oneª time.ª" {2Sm 23:8}, and "And he tookª° sixª hundredª chosenª° chariots,ª and all¹ the chariotsª of Egypt,ª and captainsª over¹ every one¹ of them." {Exd 14:7}; where LXX render τριστατας, which Jerome (on "Again the wordª of the LORDª came¹ unto¹ me, saying,ª° ... And when this cometh to pass,ª° (lo,¹ it will come,)ª° then shall they knowª° that¹ a prophetª hath been¹ amongª them." {Ezk 33:1-33}) says "among the Greeks is the name of the second rank after the royal dignity."
