- dressed his feet:
- Literally, made his feet, which seems to mean washing the feet paring the nails, and perhaps anointing or otherwise perfuming them, if not tinging the nails with henna; see note on "Then thou shalt bringª° her homeª to thine house;ª and she shall shaveª°¹ her head,ª and pareª°¹ her nails;ª" {Deu 21:12}. Sir John Chardin, in his manuscript note on this place, informs us, that it is customary in the East to have as much care of the feet as the hands; and that their barbers cut and adjust the nails with a proper instrument, because they often go barefoot. The nails of the toes of the mummies inspected in London in 1763, of which an account is given in the Philosophical Transactions for 1764, seem to have been tinged with some reddish colour. "And Davidª went upª° by the ascentª of [mount] Olivet,ª and weptª° as he went up,ª° and had his headª covered,ª° and he¹ wentª° barefoot:ª and all¹ the peopleª that¹ [was] with¹ him coveredª° every manª his head,ª and they went up,ª° weepingª° as they went up.ª°" {2Sm 15:30} + "He is gone upª° to Bajith,ª and to Dibon,ª the high places,ª to weep:ª Moabª shall howlª° over¹ Nebo,ª and over¹ Medeba:ª on all¹ their headsª [shall be] baldness,ª [and] every¹ beardª cut off.²°¹" {Isa 15:2} + "That there cameª° certain²¹ from Shechem,ª¹ from Shiloh,ª¹ and from Samaria,ª¹ [even] fourscoreª men,ª having their beardsª shaven,ª° and their clothesª rent,ª° and having cut²° themselves,¹ with offeringsª and incenseª in their hand,ª to bringª° [them] to the houseª of the LORD.ª" {Jer 41:5} + "Moreoverª whenª ye fast,ª° beª° not,ª asª the¹ hypocrites,ª of a sad countenance:ª forª they disfigureª° their²¹ faces,ª thatª they may appearª° unto menª to fast.ª° Verilyª I sayª° unto you,ª² They haveª° their²¹ reward.ª" {Mtt 6:16} + "Rejoiceª° withª them that do rejoice,ª° andª weepª° withª them that weep.ª°" {Rom 12:15} + "Rememberª° them that are in bonds,ª asª bound with¹ them;²° [and] them which suffer adversity,ª° asª beingª° yourselves²¹ alsoª inª the body.ª" {Hbr 13:3}
