- Absalom's place:
- Josephus says there was in his time, about two furlongs from Jerusalem, a marble pillar called Absalom's hand, as it is in the Hebrew (see note on "And when Samuelª rose earlyª° to meetª° Saulª in the morning,ª it was toldª° Samuel,ª saying,ª° Saulª cameª° to Carmel,ª and, behold,¹ he set him upª° a place,ª and is gone about,ª° and passed on,ª° and gone downª° to Gilgal.ª" {1Sm 15:12}); and there is one shown to the present day, in the valley of Jehoshaphat, which, though comparatively a modern structure, probably occupies the site of the original one set up by Absalom. "Therefore¹¹ is the name¹ of it² calledª° Babel;ª because¹ the LORDª did there¹ confoundª° the languageª of all¹ the earth:ª and from thence¹¹ did²° the LORDª scatter them abroadª° upon¹ the faceª of all¹ the earth.ª" {Gen 11:9} + "Nowª² this manª¹ purchasedª° a fieldª withª the¹ rewardª of iniquity;ª andª fallingª° headlong,ª he burst asunderª° in the midst,ª andª allª hisª bowelsª gushed out.ª° ... Andª it wasª° knownª unto allª the¹ dwellersª° at Jerusalem;ª insomuch asª thatª fieldª is calledª° in theirª properª tongue,ª Aceldama,ª that is to say,ª° The fieldª of blood.ª" {Act 1:18-19}
