{2 Samuel 16:13} And as David 1732 and his men y582 x376 went y3212 z8799 x1980 by the way, 1870 Shimei 8096 went along 1980 z8802 on the hill's 2022 side 6763 over against 5980 him, and cursed 7043 z8762 as he went, 1980 z8800 and threw 5619 z8762 stones 68 at 5980 him, and cast 6080 z8765 dust. 6083
cursed:
"And when kingª Davidª cameª° to¹ Bahurim,ª behold,¹ thence¹¹ came outª° a manª of the familyª¹ of the houseª of Saul,ª whose nameª [was] Shimei,ª the sonª of Gera:ª he came forth,ª° and cursedª° still as he came.ª° ... And he castª° stonesª at¹ David,ª and at all¹ the servantsª of kingª David:ª and all¹ the peopleª and all¹ the mighty menª [were] on his right handª¹ and on his left.ª¹" {2Sm 16:5-6}
cast dust:
Heb. dusted him with dust, "Andª he called untoª° [him]² twoª centurions,ª saying,ª° Make readyª° two hundredª soldiers²¹ toª goª° toª Caesarea,ª andª horsemenª threescore and ten,ª andª spearmenª two hundred,ª atª the thirdª hourª of the¹ night;ª" {Act 23:23}; It was an ancient custom, in those warm and arid countries, to lay the dust before a person of distinction, by sprinkling the ground with water. Dr. Pococke and the consul were treated with this respect when they entered Cairo. The same custom is alluded to in the well-known fable of Phedrus, in which a slave is represented going before Augustus and officiously laying the dust. To throw dust in the air while a person was passing was therefore an act of great disrespect; to do so before a sovereign prince, an indecent outrage. But it is probable that Shimei meant more than disrespect and outrage to this afflicted king. Sir John Chardin informs us, that in the East, in general, those who demand justice against a criminal throw dust upon him, signifying that he ought to be put in the grave, and hence the common imprecation among the Turks and Persians, "Be covered with earth," or, "Earth be upon thy head."
