- I am indeed:
- It is very possible that the principal incidents mentioned here were real; and that Joab found out a person whose circumstances bore a near resemblance to that which he wished to represent. She did not make the similitude too plain and visible, lest the king should see her intention before she had obtained a grant of pardon; and thus her circumstances, her mournful tale, her widow's dress, her aged person (for Josephus says she was advanced in years), and her impressive manner, all combined to make one united irresistible impression on the heart of the aged monarch "And the LORDª sentª°¹ Nathanª unto¹ David.ª And he cameª° unto¹ him, and saidª° unto him, There were¹ twoª men²¹ in oneª city;ª the oneª rich,ª and the otherª poor.ª° ... But the poorª° [man] had nothing,¹¹ save¹¹ oneª littleª ewe lamb,ª which¹ he had¹ boughtª° and nourished up:ª° and it grew upª° togetherª with¹ him, and with¹ his children;ª it did eatª° of his own meat,ª¹ and drankª° of his own cup,ª¹ and layª° in his bosom,ª and was¹ unto him as a daughter.ª" {2Sm 12:1-3} + "The treesª went forthª°°° [on a time] to anointª° a kingª over¹ them; and they saidª° unto the olive tree,ª Reignª° thou over¹ us. ... And the brambleª saidª° unto¹ the trees,ª If¹ in truthª ye¹ anointª° me kingª over¹ you, [then] comeª° [and] put your trustª° in my shadow:ª and if¹ not,¹ let fireª come outª° of¹ the bramble,ª and devourª°¹ the cedarsª of Lebanon.ª" {Jdg 9:8-15}
