- wrote a letter:
- It was resolved in David's breast that Uriah must die - that innocent, valiant, and gallant man, who was ready to sacrifice his life for the honour of his prince; and, worse than all, by being himself made the bearer of letters to Joab which prescribed the mode by which he was to be murdered. This was the greatest treachery and villany on the part of David; while Joab appears to enter as fully upon the execution of the murder, being perhaps pleased to have this opportunity of further enthralling his king, and thus increasing his own power. "So she wroteª° lettersª in Ahab'sª name,ª and sealedª° [them] with his seal,ª and sentª° the lettersª unto¹ the eldersª and to¹ the noblesª that¹ [were] in his city,ª dwellingª° with¹ Naboth.ª ... And setª° twoª men,²¹ sonsª of Belial,ª before¹ him, to bear witness²° against¹ him, saying,ª° Thou didst blasphemeª° Godª and the king.ª And [then] carry him out,ª° and stoneª° him, that he may die.ª°" {1Kg 21:8-10} + "Keep backª° thy servantª also¹ from presumptuousª¹ [sins]; let them not¹ have dominionª° over me: then¹ shall I be upright,ª° and I shall be innocentª° from the greatª transgression.ª¹" {Psa 19:13} + "Thy tongueª devisethª° mischiefs;ª like a sharpª° razor,ª workingª° deceitfully.ª" {Psa 52:2} + "Surely¹ men²² of low degree¹¹ [are] vanity,ª [and] men² of high degree¹¹ [are] a lie:ª to be laidª° in the balance,ª they¹ [are] altogetherª [lighter] than vanity.ª¹" {Psa 62:9} + "Oh that²°¹ my headª were¹ waters,ª and mine eyesª a fountainª of tears,ª that I might weepª° dayª and nightª for¹ the slainª of the daughterª of my people!ª ... Take ye heedª° every oneª of his neighbour,ª¹ and trustª° ye not¹ in¹ any¹ brother:ª for¹ every¹ brotherª will utterly²° supplant,ª° and every¹ neighbourª will walkª° with slanders.ª" {Jer 9:1-4} + "The heartª [is] deceitfulª above all¹¹ [things], and desperately wicked:ª° who¹ can knowª° it?" {Jer 17:9} + "That they may do evilª¹ with both handsª earnestly,ª° the princeª asketh,ª° and the judgeª° [asketh] for a reward;ª and the greatª [man], he¹ utterethª° his mischievousª desire:ª so they wrap it up.ª° ... Trustª° ye not¹ in a friend,ª put ye not confidenceª°¹ in a guide:ª keepª° the doorsª of thy mouthª from her that liethª°¹ in thy bosom.ª" {Mic 7:3-5}
