- Methegammah:
- or, the bridle of Ammah, "Joabª also and Abishaiª pursuedª° afterª Abner:ª and the sunª went downª° when they¹ were comeª° to¹ the hillª of Ammah,ª that¹ [lieth] beforeª¹ Giahª by the wayª of the wildernessª of Gibeon.ª" {2Sm 2:24} + "Now after¹ this²¹ it came to pass,¹ that Davidª smoteª°¹ the Philistines,ª and subduedª° them, and tookª°¹ Gathª and her townsª out of the handª¹ of the Philistines.ª ... And Benaiahª the sonª of Jehoiada²¹ [was] over¹ the Cherethitesª and the Pelethites;ª and the sonsª of Davidª [were] chiefª aboutª the king.ª" {1Ch 18:1-17}, Gath, In the parallel passage of Chronicles, we read, "David took Gath and her towns;" and it is probable, that Gath and its districts were called Metheg-ammah in David's time; which, being unusual or becoming obsolete, in the time of the author of the Chronicles, led him thus to explain it.
