- Even the Kohathites, who were appointed to carry the ark, after it was covered by the priests, were forbidden to touch it on pain of death; but Uzzah, who certainly was no priest, probably with some degree of irreverence, having presumed to lay his hand upon the ark, which perhaps was not covered, thus incurred the penalty due to his rashness. "And when Aaronª and his sonsª have made an endª° of coveringª°¹ the sanctuary,ª and all¹ the vesselsª of the sanctuary,ª as the campª is to set forward;ª° afterª that,¹ the sonsª of Kohathª shall comeª° to bearª° [it]: but they shall not¹ touchª°¹ [any] holy thing,ª lest they die.ª° These¹ [things are] the burdenª of the sonsª of Kohathª in the tabernacleª of the congregation.ª" {Num 4:15} + "But thus¹ doª° unto them, that they may live,ª° and not¹ die,ª° when they approachª°¹ unto the most² holy things:ª Aaronª and his sonsª shall go in,ª° and appointª° them every² oneª to¹ his serviceª and to¹ his burden:ª ...
