{2 Samuel 3:27} And when Abner 74 was returned 7725 z8799 to Hebron, 2275 Joab 3097 took him aside 5186 z8686 in 413 8432 the gate 8179 to speak 1696 z8763 with x854 him quietly, 7987 and smote 5221 z8686 him there x8033 under the fifth 2570 [rib], that he died, 4191 z8799 for the blood 1818 of Asahel 6214 his brother. 251
took him:
"And Joabª saidª° to Amasa,ª [Art] thou¹ in health,ª my brother?ª And Joabª tookª° Amasaª by the beardª with the rightª handª to kissª° him. ... But Amasaª took no¹ heedª° to the swordª that¹ [was] in Joab'sª hand:ª so he smoteª° him therewith in¹ the fifthª [rib], and shed outª° his bowelsª to the ground,ª and struck¹ him not¹ again;²° and he died.ª° So Joabª and Abishaiª his brotherª pursuedª° afterª Shebaª the sonª of Bichri.ª" {2Sm 20:9-10} + "Cursedª° [be] he that smitethª° his neighbourª secretly.ª And all¹ the peopleª shall say,ª° Amen.ª" {Deu 27:24} + "Moreover¹ thou¹ knowestª° also¹ what¹ Joabª the sonª of Zeruiahª didª° to me, [and] what¹ he didª° to the twoª captainsª of the hostsª of Israel,ª unto Abnerª the sonª of Ner,ª and unto Amasaª the sonª of Jether,ª whom he slew,ª° and shedª° the bloodª of warª in peace,ª and putª° the bloodª of warª upon his girdleª that¹ [was] about his loins,ª and in his shoesª that¹ [were] on his feet.ª" {1Kg 2:5} + "And the LORDª shall returnª°¹ his bloodª upon¹ his own head,ª who¹ fellª° upon twoª men²¹ more righteousª and betterª than¹ he, and slewª° them with the sword,ª my fatherª Davidª not¹ knowingª° [thereof, to wit],¹ Abnerª the sonª of Ner,ª captainª of the hostª of Israel,ª and Amasaª the sonª of Jether,ª captainª of the hostª of Judah.ª" {1Kg 2:32}
quietly:
or, peaceably, "Then aroseª° Ishmaelª the sonª of Nethaniah,ª and the tenª men²¹ that¹ were¹ with¹ him, and smoteª°¹ Gedaliahª the sonª of Ahikamª the sonª of Shaphanª with the sword,ª and slewª° him, whom¹ the kingª of Babylonª had made governorª° over the land.ª" {Jer 41:2} + "And Ishmaelª the sonª of Nethaniahª went forthª° from¹ Mizpahª to meetª° them, weepingª° all along²° as he went:ª° and it came to pass,¹ as he metª° them, he saidª° unto¹ them, Comeª° to¹ Gedaliahª the sonª of Ahikam.ª ... And it was¹ [so], when they cameª° into¹ the midstª of the city,ª that Ishmaelª the sonª of Nethaniahª slewª° them, [and cast them] into¹ the midstª of the pit,ª he,¹ and the men²¹ that¹ [were] with¹ him." {Jer 41:6-7}
and smote:
Joab was afraid that Abner, after rendering such essential service to David, would be made the general of the army; and therefore, under pretence of avenging the death of his brother, he treacherously assassinated the unsuspecting and too-confiding Abner, and such was the power of this cool-blooded and nefarious murderer, that the king dared not bring him to justice for his crime. But, while Joab's conduct cannot be too severely reprobated, the justice of God is apparent in Abner's punishment; who, from ambition, had pertinaciously, against his conscience, opposed the declared will of God; and was induced by base resentment to desert Ish-bosheth, and offer his services to David. See note on "And it came to pass,¹ while there was¹ warª between¹ the houseª of Saulª and the houseª of David,ª that Abnerª made himself strongª° for the houseª of Saul.ª" {2Sm 3:6}, and see note on "And they came¹ thither²°¹ into¹ the midstª of the house,ª [as though] they would have fetchedª° wheat;ª and they smoteª° him under¹ the fifthª [rib]: and Rechabª and Baanahª his brotherª escaped.ª°" {2Sm 4:6}.
for the blood:
"And Asahelª pursuedª° afterª Abner;ª and in going²°¹ he turnedª° not¹ to¹ the right¹ hand² nor to¹ the leftª from followingª¹ Abner.ª ... Howbeit he refusedª° to turn aside:ª° wherefore Abnerª with the hinder end² of¹ the spearª smoteª° him underª the fifthª [rib], that the spearª came outª° behindª¹ him; and he fell downª° there,¹ and diedª° in the same place:ª and it came to pass,¹ [that] as many¹ as cameª° to¹ the placeª where¹ Asahelª fell downª° and diedª° stood still.ª°" {2Sm 2:19-23}
