- shearing:
- This was a very ancient custom, and appears to have been always attended with festivity. The ancient Romans, however, used to pluck off the wool from the sheep's backs; and hence a fleece was called vellus, a vellendo, from plucking it off. Pliny says, that in his time sheep were not shorn every where, but in some places the wool was still plucked off. "And it was toldª° Tamar,ª saying,ª° Behold¹ thy father in lawª goeth upª° to Timnathª to shearª° his sheep.ª" {Gen 38:13} + "And it came to pass¹ after two full² years,ª¹ that Absalomª had¹ sheepshearersª° in Baalhazor,ª which¹ [is] beside¹ Ephraim:ª and Absalomª invitedª° all¹ the king'sª sons.ª ... And Absalomª cameª° to¹ the king,ª and said,ª° Behold¹ now,¹ thy servantª hath sheepshearers;ª° let²° the king,ª I beseech thee,¹ and his servantsª go²°¹ with¹ thy servant.ª" {2Sm 13:23-24}
