The district around En-gedi, near the western coast of the Dead Sea, is reported by travellers to be a mountainous territory, filled with caverns; and consequently, proper for David in his present circumstances. Dr. Lightfoot thinks this was the wilderness of Judah, in which David was when he penned the "[[A Psalmª of David,ª when he was¹ in the wildernessª of Judah.]]ª O God,ª thou¹ [art] my God;ª early will I seekª° thee: my soulª thirstethª° for thee, my fleshª longethª° for thee in a dryª and thirstyª land,ª where noª waterª is;" {Psa 63:1}, which breathes as much pious and devout affection as almost any of his Psalms; for in all places and in all conditions he still kept up his communion with God. - If Christians knew their privileges better, and acted up thereto, there would be less murmuring at the dark dispensations of Divine Providence. "And it came to pass,¹ when¹ Saulª was returnedª° from followingª¹ the Philistines,ª that it was toldª° him, saying,ª° Behold,¹ Davidª [is] in the wildernessª of Engedi.ª" {1Sm 24:1} + "And they returned,ª° and cameª° toª Enmishpat,ª which¹ [is] Kadesh,ª and smoteª°¹ all¹ the countryª of the Amalekites,ª and also¹¹ the Amorites,ª that dweltª° in Hazezontamar.ª" {Gen 14:7} + "And Nibshan,ª and the city¹ of Salt,ª and Engedi;ª sixª citiesª with their villages.ª" {Jsh 15:62} + "Then there cameª° some that toldª° Jehoshaphat,ª saying,ª° There comethª° a greatª multitudeª against¹ thee from beyondª¹ the seaª on this side Syria;ª¹ and, behold,¹ they [be] in Hazazontamar,ª which¹ [is] Engedi.ª" {2Ch 20:2} + "My belovedª [is] unto me [as] a clusterª of camphireª in the vineyardsª of Engedi.ª" {Sgs 1:14} + "And it shall come to pass,¹ [that] the fishersª shall standª°°° upon¹ it from Engediª¹ even unto¹ Eneglaim;ª they shall be¹ a [place] to spread forthª nets;ª their fishª shall be¹ according to their kinds,ª as the fishª of the greatª sea,ª exceedingª many.ª" {Ezk 47:10} |
