- inquired:
- In what way David made this enquiry we are not told; but it was probably by means of Abiathar; and therefore it would seem, that with Houbigant, we should read the "And it came to pass,¹ when Abiatharª the sonª of Ahimelechª fledª° to¹ Davidª to Keilah,ª [that] he came downª° [with] an ephodª in his hand.ª" {1Sm 23:6} immediately after the "Then they toldª° David,ª saying,ª° Behold,¹ the Philistinesª fightª° against Keilah,ª and they¹ robª°¹ the threshingfloors.ª" {1Sm 23:1}. - This adventure was truly noble and patriotic. Had not David loved his country, and been above all motives of private and personal revenge, he would have rejoiced in this invasion of Judea, as producing a strong diversion in his favour, and embroiling his inveterate enemy. In most cases, a man with David's wrongs would have joined with the enemies of his country, and avenged himself on the author of his calamities; but he thinks of nothing but succouring Keilah, and using his power and influence in behalf of his brethren. "Then Davidª enquiredª° of the LORDª yet¹ again.ª° And the LORDª answeredª° him and said,ª° Arise,ª° go downª° to Keilah;ª for¹ I¹ will deliverª°¹ the Philistinesª into thine hand.ª" {1Sm 23:4} + "And it came to pass,¹ when Abiatharª the sonª of Ahimelechª fledª° to¹ Davidª to Keilah,ª [that] he came downª° [with] an ephodª in his hand.ª" {1Sm 23:6} + "And Davidª knewª° that¹ Saulª secretly practisedª° mischiefª against¹ him; and he saidª° to¹ Abiatharª the priest,ª Bring hitherª° the ephod.ª ... Then saidª° David,ª Will the menª of Keilahª deliverª° me and my men²¹ into the handª of Saul?ª And the LORDª said,ª° They will deliver [thee] up.ª°" {1Sm 23:9-12} + "And Davidª enquiredª° at the LORD,ª saying,ª° Shall I pursueª° afterª this¹ troop?ª shall I overtakeª° them? And he answeredª° him, Pursue:ª° for¹ thou shalt surely²° overtakeª° [them], and without fail²° recoverª° [all]." {1Sm 30:8} + "And he shall standª° beforeª Eleazarª the priest,ª who shall askª° [counsel] for him after the judgmentª of Urimª beforeª the LORD:ª at¹ his wordª shall they go out,ª° and at¹ his wordª they shall come in,ª° [both] he,¹ and all¹ the childrenª of Israelª with¹ him, even all¹ the congregation.ª" {Num 27:21} + "And the men²¹ tookª° of their victuals,ª¹ and askedª° not¹ [counsel] at the mouthª of the LORD.ª" {Jsh 9:14} + "Now afterª the deathª of Joshuaª it came to pass,¹ that the childrenª of Israelª askedª° the LORD,ª saying,ª° Who¹ shall go upª° for us against¹ the Canaanitesª first,ª to fightª° against them?" {Jdg 1:1} + "And Davidª enquiredª° of the LORD,ª saying,ª° Shall I go upª° to¹ the Philistines?ª wilt thou deliverª° them into mine hand?ª And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ David,ª Go up:ª° for¹ I will doubtless²° deliverª°¹ the Philistinesª into thine hand.ª" {2Sm 5:19} + "And when Davidª enquiredª° of the LORD,ª he said,ª° Thou shalt not¹ go up;ª° [but] fetch a compassª°¹ behindª them, and comeª° upon them over againstª¹ the mulberry trees.ª" {2Sm 5:23} + "And Davidª enquiredª° of God,ª saying,ª° Shall I go upª° against¹ the Philistines?ª and wilt thou deliverª° them into mine hand?ª And the LORDª saidª° unto him, Go up;ª° for I will deliverª° them into thine hand.ª" {1Ch 14:10} + "I will instructª° thee and teachª° thee in the wayª whichª thou shalt go:²°¹ I will guideª°¹ thee with mine eye.ª" {Psa 32:8} + "Trustª° in¹ the LORDª with all¹ thine heart;ª and leanª° not¹ unto¹ thine own understanding.ª ... In all¹ thy waysª acknowledgeª° him, and he¹ shall directª° thy paths.ª" {Prv 3:5-6} + "O LORD,ª I knowª° that¹ the wayª of manª [is] not¹ in himself: [it is] not¹ in manª that walkethª° to directª°¹ his steps.ª" {Jer 10:23}
