- fourscore:
- The LXX read, τριακοσιους και πεντε ανδρας, "three hundred and five men;" and Josephus, "three hundred and eighty-five men." Probably the eighty-five were priests and the three hundred the families of the priests; three hundred and eighty-five being the whole population of Nob. "Wherefore¹ the LORDª Godª of Israelª saith,ª° I saidª° indeedª° [that] thy house,ª and the houseª of thy father,ª should walkª° beforeª me for² ever:ª¹ but now¹ the LORDª saith,ª° Be it far¹ from me;² for¹ them that honourª° me I will honour,ª° and they that despiseª° me shall be lightly esteemed.ª° ... And the manª of thine, [whom] I shall not¹ cut offª° from¹¹ mine altar,ª [shall be] to consumeª°¹ thine eyes,ª and to grieveª¹ thine heart:ª and all¹ the increaseª of thine houseª shall dieª° in the flower of their age.²¹" {1Sm 2:30-33} + "And it shall come to pass,¹ [that] every one¹ that is leftª° in thine houseª shall comeª° [and] crouchª° to him for a pieceª of silverª and a morselª of bread,ª and shall say,ª° Putª° me, I pray thee,¹ into¹ oneª of the priests' offices,ª that I may eatª° a pieceª of bread.ª" {1Sm 2:36} + "In that¹ dayª I will performª° against¹ Eliª¹ all¹ [things] which¹ I have spokenª° concerningª his house:ª when I begin,ª° I will also make an end.ª° ... And therefore¹ I have swornª° unto the houseª of Eli,ª that the iniquityª of Eli'sª houseª shall not¹ be purgedª° with sacrificeª nor offeringª for² ever.ª¹" {1Sm 3:12-14}
