- The king:
- The whole of this is a gross falsehood; and which was attended with the most fatal consequences. It is well known that from all antiquity it was held no crime to tell a lie in order to save life. Thus Diphilon Υπολαμβανω το ψευδας επι σωτηρια λεγομενον, ουδεν περιποιεισθαι δυσχερες. "I hold it right to tell a lie for safety. Nothing should be avoided to save life." A heathen may say or sing thus, but no Christian can act thus and save his soul, though he may save his life. "And Saulª saidª° unto¹ Michal,ª Why¹ hast thou deceived¹ me so,²°¹ and sent awayª°¹ mine enemy,ª° that he is escaped?ª° And Michalª answeredª°¹ Saul,ª He¹ saidª° unto¹ me, Let me go;ª° why¹ should I killª° thee?" {1Sm 19:17} + "And Davidª saidª° unto Abiathar,ª I knewª° [it] that¹ day,ª when¹ Doegª the Edomiteª [was] there,¹ that¹ he would surely²° tellª° Saul:ª I¹ have occasionedª° [the death] of all¹ the personsª of thy father'sª house.ª" {1Sm 22:22} + "And Isaacª saidª° unto¹ his son,ª How¹ [is it]¹ that thou hast foundª° [it] so quickly,ª° my son?ª And he said,ª° Because¹ the LORDª thy Godª broughtª° [it] to¹ me.²" {Gen 27:20} + "And he said,ª° [Art] thou¹ my very¹ sonª Esau?ª And he said,ª° I¹ [am]." {Gen 27:24} + "He saidª° unto him, I¹ [am] a prophetª also¹ as thou [art]; and an angelª spakeª° unto¹ me by the wordª of the LORD,ª saying,ª° Bring him backª° with¹ thee into¹ thine house,ª that he may eatª° breadª and drinkª° water.ª [But] he liedª° unto him." {1Kg 13:18} + "Removeª° from¹ me the wayª of lying:ª and grant me thy lawª graciously.ª°" {Psa 119:29} + "Forª before² that certainª cameª° fromª James,ª he did eatª° withª the¹ Gentiles:ª butª whenª they were come,ª° he withdrewª° andª separatedª° himself,ª fearingª° them¹ which were ofª the circumcision.ª" {Gal 2:12} + "Lieª° notª one to another,ªª seeing that ye have put offª° the¹ oldª manª withª hisª deeds;ª" {Col 3:9}
