- he went out:
- "But all¹ Israelª and Judahª lovedª°¹ David,ª because¹ he¹ went outª° and came inª° beforeª them." {1Sm 18:16} + "Let the LORD,ª the Godª of the spiritsª of all¹ flesh,ª setª° a manª over¹ the congregation,ª ... Which¹ may go outª° beforeª them, and which¹ may go inª° beforeª them, and which¹ may lead them out,ª° and which¹ may bring them in;ª° that the congregationª of the LORDª be¹ not¹ as sheepª which¹ have no¹ shepherd.ª°" {Num 27:16-17} + "Also¹ in time past,ªª when Saulª was¹ kingª over¹ us, thou¹ wast¹ he that leddest outª° and broughtest¹¹ in²° Israel:ª and the LORDª saidª° to thee, Thou¹ shalt feedª°¹ my peopleª¹ Israel,ª and thou¹ shalt be¹ a captainª over¹ Israel.ª" {2Sm 5:2} + "The LORDª shall preserveª° thy going outª° and thy coming inª° from this time forth,¹¹ and even for² evermore.ª¹" {Psa 121:8}; Saul was sensible that the Lord was departed from him; while he perceived, with evident sorrow of heart, that the Lord had given David peculiar wisdom, and that he was with him to prosper all his undertakings. This increased the disquietude of his malevolent mind, and his dread of David as a prevailing rival. He therefore removed him from his presence. This impolitic step, however, served the more to ingratiate David with the people, by affording him the opportunity of leading them forth to victory over their enemies.
