"And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you." {Jsh 2:9} + "And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled." {Jdg 7:21} + "For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, [even] the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us. ... Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it [was], and fled for their life." {2Kg 7:6-7} + "Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet." {Job 18:11} + "There were they in great fear: for God [is] in the generation of the righteous." {Psa 14:5}
the spoilers:
"And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way [that leadeth to] Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:" {1Sm 13:17} + "And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash." {1Sm 13:23}
the earth quaked:
"And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly." {Exd 19:18} + "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must come to pass, but the end is not yet." {Mtt 24:6} + " Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. ... And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;" {Mtt 27:50-51}
very great trembling:
Heb. trembling of God, "And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that [were] round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob." {Gen 35:5} + "And upon them that are left [alive] of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. ... And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies." {Lev 26:36-37} + "And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines." {2Sm 5:24} + "Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another." {Dan 5:6}; God will in some way or other direct the steps of those who acknowledge him in all their ways, and seek unto him for direction with full purpose of heart. Sometimes we find most comfort in that which is least our own doing, and into which we have been led by the unexpected, but well observed, turns of Providence.
