In the Vulgate this chapter begins thus: Et factum est quasi post mensem, "And it came to pass about a month after;" which is also the reading of the principal copies of the Septuagint; and is also found in Josephus, though it appears to be of little authority. "And when ye sawª ° that¹ Nahashª the kingª of the childrenª of Ammonª cameª ° against¹ you, ye saidª ° unto me, Nay;¹ but¹ a kingª shall reignª ° over¹ us: when the LORDª your Godª [was] your king.ª" {1Sm 12:12} + "And the angerª of the LORDª was hotª ° against Israel,ª and he soldª ° them into the handsª of the Philistines,ª and into the handsª of the childrenª of Ammon.ª" {Jdg 10:7} + "And the eldersª of Gileadª saidª ° unto¹ Jephthah,ª Therefore¹ we turn againª ° to¹ thee now,¹ that thou mayest goª ° with¹ us, and fightª ° against the childrenª of Ammon,ª and be¹ our headª over all¹ the inhabitantsª ° of Gilead.ª ... "And when the inhabitantsª ° of Jabeshgileadª ª heardª °¹ ¹ of that which¹ the Philistinesª had doneª ° to Saul;ª ...
