drew water:
Grotius says, that the pouring out of water means the shedding of tears; and the Targum reads, "And they poured out their hearts in penitence, as waters, before the Lord." Others suppose that it was done emblematically, to represent the contrition of their hearts, and their desire to wash away their past offences. But some learned men conceive that it was poured out as a libation, in token of joy, after they had fasted and confessed their sin, as they were wont to do in the feast of tabernacles. (See note on "On the eighthª dayª ye shall have¹ a solemn assembly:ª ye shall doª° no¹¹ servileª workª [therein]:" {Num 29:35}.) "And Hannahª answeredª° and said,ª° No,¹ my lord,ª I [am] a womanª of a sorrowfulª spirit:ª I¹ have drunkª° neither¹ wineª nor strong drink,ª but have poured outª°¹ my soulª beforeª the LORD.ª" {1Sm 1:15} + "For¹ we must needs²° die,ª° and [are] as waterª spiltª° on the ground,ª which¹ cannot¹ be gathered up¹ again;²° neither¹ doth Godª respectª° [any] person:ª yet doth he deviseª° means,ª that his banishedª° be not expelledª° from¹ him." {2Sm 14:14} + "My friendsª scornª° me: [but] mine eyeª poureth outª° [tears] unto¹ God.ª" {Job 16:20} + "I am wearyª° with my groaning;ª all¹ the nightª make I my bedª to swim;ª° I waterª° my couchª with my tears.ª" {Psa 6:6} + "My tearsª have been¹ my meatª dayª and night,ª while they continuallyª¹ sayª° unto¹ me, Where¹ [is] thy God?ª" {Psa 42:3} + "Riversª of watersª run downª° mine eyes,ª because¹ they keepª° not¹ thy law.ª" {Psa 119:136} + "Oh that²°¹ my headª were¹ waters,ª and mine eyesª a fountainª of tears,ª that I might weepª° dayª and nightª for¹ the slainª of the daughterª of my people!ª" {Jer 9:1} + "Mine eyesª do failª° with tears,ª my bowelsª are troubled,ª° my liverª is pouredª° upon the earth,ª for¹ the destructionª of the daughterª of my people;ª because the childrenª and the sucklingsª° swoonª° in the streetsª of the city.ª" {Lam 2:11} + "Their heartª criedª° unto¹ the Lord,ª O wallª of the daughterª of Zion,ª let tearsª run downª° like a riverª dayª and night:ª giveª° thyself no¹ rest;ª let not¹ the appleª of thine eyeª cease.ª°" {Lam 2:18} + "Mine eyeª trickleth down,ª° and ceasethª° not,¹ without any¹¹ intermission,ª" {Lam 3:49}
