- spread therefore:
- Hebrew "spread thy wing;" the emblem of protection; and a metaphor taken from the young of fowls, which run under the wings of their mother from birds of prey. Even to the present day, when a Jew marries a woman, he throws the skirts of his talith over her, to signify that he has taken her under his protection. "Now when I passedª° by¹ thee, and looked²° upon¹ thee, behold,¹ thy timeª [was] the timeª of love;ª and I spreadª° my skirtª over¹ thee, and coveredª° thy nakedness:ª yea, I swareª° unto thee, and enteredª° into a covenantª with¹ thee, saithª° the Lordª GOD,ª and thou becamest¹ mine." {Ezk 16:8}
