- but Ruth:
- The LXX add, και επεστρεψεν εις τον λαον αυτης, "and returned to her own people." The Vulgate, Syriac, and Arabic are to the same purpose. It seems a very natural addition, and agrees with the assertion in the next verse; and is accordingly adopted by Houbigant as a part of the text. "But ye¹ that did cleaveª unto the LORDª your Godª [are] aliveª every one¹ of you this day.ª" {Deu 4:4} + "Thou shalt fearª°¹ the LORDª thy God;ª him shalt thou serve,ª° and to him shalt thou cleave,ª° and swearª° by his name.ª" {Deu 10:20} + "A friendª lovethª° at all¹ times,ª and a brotherª is bornª° for adversity.ª" {Prv 17:17} + "A manª [that hath] friendsª must shew himself friendly:ª° and there isª a friendª° [that] sticketh closerª than a brother.ª¹" {Prv 18:24} + "For¹ the LORDª will have mercyª° on¹ Jacob,ª and will yet¹ chooseª° Israel,ª and set²°¹ them in¹ their own land:ª and the strangersª shall be joinedª° with¹ them, and they shall cleaveª° to¹ the houseª of Jacob.ª" {Isa 14:1} + "Thus¹ saithª° the LORDª of hosts;ª In those¹ daysª [it shall come to pass], that¹ tenª men²¹ shall take holdª° out of all¹¹ languagesª of the nations,ª even shall take holdª° of the skirtª of him¹ that is a Jew,ª² saying,ª° We will go²°¹ with¹ you: for¹ we have heardª° [that] Godª [is] with¹ you." {Zch 8:23} + "Thenª saidª° Jesusª unto his²¹ disciples,ª If anyª [man] willª° comeª° afterª me,ª let him denyª° himself,ª andª take upª° his²¹ cross,ª andª followª° me.ª" {Mtt 16:24} + "Fromª thatª [time] manyª of hisª disciplesª wentª° back,ªª andª walkedª° no moreª withª him.ª ... Andª weª believeª° andª are sureª° thatª thouª artª° that Christ,ª the¹ Sonª of the¹ livingª° God.ª" {Jhn 6:66-69} + "Howbeitª certainª menª claveª° unto him,ª and¹ believed:ª° amongª the whichª² [was] Dionysiusª the¹ Areopagite,ª andª a womanª namedª Damaris,ª andª othersª withª them.ª" {Act 17:34} + "Butª weª areª° notª of them who draw backª untoª perdition;ª butª of them that believeª to² the savingª¹ of the soul.ª" {Hbr 10:39}
