- Let us flee:
- This was done, not only because they had placed an ambuscade behind Gibeah, which was to enter and burn the city as soon as the Benjamites left it; but it would seem, that the slingers, by being within the city and its fortifications, had great advantage over the Israelites by their slings, when they could not come among them with their swords, unless they got them in the plain country. "And Joshuaª and all¹ Israelª made as if they were beatenª° beforeª them, and fledª° by the wayª of the wilderness.ª ... And all¹ the peopleª that¹ [were] in Aiª°² were called²° together¹ to pursueª° afterª them: and they pursuedª° afterª Joshua,ª and were drawn awayª° from¹ the city.ª" {Jsh 8:15-16}
