That Jephthah did not sacrifice his daughter, but consecrated her to the service of God in the tabernacle, in a state of celibacy, will we imagine be evident from the following consideration -
1. Human sacrifices were ever an abomination to Jehovah, of which Jephthah could not be ignorant; and consequently he would neither have made such a vow, nor carried it into execution.
2. We are expressly told ("Then the Spiritª of the LORDª came¹ upon¹ Jephthah,ª and he passed overª°¹ Gilead,ª and Manasseh,ª and passed overª°¹ Mizpehª of Gilead,ª and from Mizpehª¹ of Gileadª he passed overª° [unto] the childrenª of Ammon.ª" {Jdg 11:29}) that Jephthah was under the influence of the Spirit of God, which would effectually prevent him from embruing his hands in the blood of his own child.
3. He had it in his power to redeem his daughter ("And if¹ it¹ [be] a female,ª then thy estimationª shall be¹ thirtyª shekels.ª" {Lev 27:4}); and surely his only child must have been of more value than thirty shekles.
4. Besides, who was to perform the horrid rite? Not Jephthah himself, who was no priest, and in whom it would have been most unnatural and inhuman; and the priests would certainly have dissuaded him from it.
5. The sacred historian informs us, that she bewailed her virginity, that she knew no man, and that the Israelitish women went yearly to comfort or lament with her. "Then it shall be,¹ that whatsoever²°¹ cometh forthª° of the doorsª¹ of my houseª to meetª° me, when I returnª° in peaceª from the childrenª¹ of Ammon,ª shall surely be¹ the LORD'S,ª and I will offer it upª° for a burnt offering.ª" {Jdg 11:31} + "Notwithstanding¹ no¹¹ devoted thing,ª that¹ a manª shall devoteª° unto the LORDª of all¹¹ that¹ he hath, [both] of manª¹ and beast,ª and of the fieldª¹ of his possession,ª shall be soldª° or redeemed:ª° every¹ devoted thingª [is] most² holyª unto the LORD.ª ... None¹¹ devoted,ª which¹ shall be² devotedª° of¹ men,ª shall be redeemed;ª° [but] shall surely²° be put to death.ª°" {Lev 27:28-29} + "Thou shalt not¹ doª° so¹ unto the LORDª thy God:ª for¹ every¹ abominationª to the LORD,ª which¹ he hateth,ª° have they doneª° unto their gods;ª for¹ even¹¹ their sonsª and their daughtersª they have burntª° in the fireª to their gods.ª" {Deu 12:31} + "He that killethª° an oxª [is as if] he slewª° a man;ª he that sacrificethª° a lamb,ª [as if] he cut off²° a dog's² neck;ª°¹ he that offerethª° an oblation,ª [as if he offered] swine'sª blood;ª he that burnethª° incense,ª [as if] he blessedª° an idol.ª Yea,¹ they¹ have chosenª° their own ways,ª and their soulª delightethª° in their abominations.ª" {Isa 66:3}
to his vow:
"And she vowedª° a vow,ª and said,ª° O LORDª of hosts,ª if¹ thou wilt indeed²° lookª° on the afflictionª of thine handmaid,ª and rememberª° me, and not¹ forgetª°¹ thine handmaid,ª but wilt giveª° unto thine handmaidª a man²¹ child,ª then I will giveª° him unto the LORDª all¹ the daysª of his life,ª and there shall no¹ razorª comeª° upon¹ his head.ª" {1Sm 1:11} + "But Hannahª went not up;ª°¹ for¹ she saidª° unto her husband,ª [I will not go up] until¹ the childª be weaned,ª° and [then] I will bringª° him, that he may appearª°¹ beforeª the LORD,ª and there¹ abideª° for² ever.ª¹" {1Sm 1:22} + "And when¹ she had weanedª° him, she took him upª° with¹ her, with threeª bullocks,ª and oneª ephahª of flour,ª and a bottleª of wine,ª and broughtª° him unto the houseª of the LORDª in Shiloh:ª and the childª [was] young.ª" {1Sm 1:24} + "Therefore also¹ I¹ have lentª° him to the LORD;ª as long¹ as¹ he livethª he¹ shall be¹ lentª° to the LORD.ª And he worshippedª° the LORDª there.¹" {1Sm 1:28} + "But Samuelª ministeredª°¹ beforeª the LORD,ª [being] a child,ª girdedª° with a linenª ephod.ª" {1Sm 2:18}
