"And the eldersª of Gileadª saidª ° unto¹ Jephthah,ª Therefore¹ we turn againª ° to¹ thee now,¹ that thou mayest goª ° with¹ us, and fightª ° against the childrenª of Ammon,ª and be¹ our headª over all¹ the inhabitantsª ° of Gilead.ª" {Jdg 11:8}

uttered:
"And Davidª knewª ° that¹ Saulª secretly practisedª ° mischiefª against¹ him; and he saidª ° to¹ Abiatharª the priest,ª Bring hitherª ° the ephod.ª ... Then saidª ° David,ª Will the menª of Keilahª deliverª ° me and my men² ¹ into the handª of Saul?ª And the LORDª said,ª ° They will deliver [thee] up.ª °" {1Sm 23:9-12} + "And now,¹ O LORDª my God,ª thou¹ hast made¹ thy servantª kingª ° instead¹ of Davidª my father:ª and I¹ [am but] a littleª child:ª I knowª ° not¹ [how] to go outª ° or come in.ª ° ... Jephthah uttered:
That is, upon his elevation, he immediately retired to his devotion, and in prayer spread the whole matter before God, both his choice to the office, and his execution of the office, as one that had his eye ever toward the Lord, and would do nothing without him; that leaned not to his own understanding or courage, but depended on the Almighty God, and his favour. This is an ensample worthy of universal imitation; in All Our Ways, whether great or apparently subordinate, let us acknowledge God and seek his direction. So shall we make our way prosperous, and obtain that peace which passeth all understanding. Jephthah opened his campaign with prayer.

Mizpeh:
This Mizpeh was east of Jordan in the mountains of Gilead ("And Mizpah;ª forª he said,ª ° The LORDª watchª ° between¹ me and thee, when¹ we are absentª ° oneª from another.ª ¹" {Gen 31:49}); and hence called Mizpeh of Gilead ("Then the Spiritª of the LORDª came¹ upon¹ Jephthah,ª and he passed overª °¹ Gilead,ª and Manasseh,ª and passed overª °¹ Mizpehª of Gilead,ª and from Mizpehª ¹ of Gileadª he passed overª ° [unto] the childrenª of Ammon.ª" {Jdg 11:29}), to distinguish it from another place of the same name, west of Jordan, in the tribe of Judah. "And Dilean,ª and Mizpeh,ª and Joktheel,ª" {Jsh 15:38}
