- Beer:
- Probably the Beer mentioned by Mr. Maundrell, three hours and a half, or about ten miles, north of Jerusalem, towards Shechem. It is situated toward the south, on an easy declivity; and has a fountain of excellent water at the bottom of the hill, from which it has taken its name. Close to the well are the mouldering walls of a ruined khan; and on the summit of the hill two large arches still remain of a ruined convent. Dr. Richardson says, that it seems to have been once a place of considerable consequence. "And from thence¹¹ [they went] to Beer:ª that¹ [is] the wellª whereof¹ the LORDª spakeª° unto Moses,ª Gather²° the people² together,ª°¹¹ and I will giveª° them water.ª" {Num 21:16} + "And all¹ the villagesª that¹ [were] round aboutª these¹ citiesª to¹ Baalathbeer,ª Ramath²¹ of the south.ª This¹ [is] the inheritanceª of the tribeª of the childrenª of Simeonª according to their families.ª" {Jsh 19:8} + "And he went²° through¹ all¹ the tribesª of Israelª unto Abel,ª and to Bethmaachah,ª and all¹ the Berites:ª and they were gathered together,ª°²° and wentª° also¹ afterª him." {2Sm 20:14}
