- The trees:
- This is the most ancient fable or apologue extant; and is extremely beautiful, apposite, and intelligible. "And Jehoashª the kingª of Israelª sentª° to¹ Amaziahª kingª of Judah,ª saying,ª° The thistleª that¹ [was] in Lebanonª sentª° to¹ the cedarª that¹ [was] in Lebanon,ª saying,ª° Giveª°¹ thy daughterª to my sonª to wife:ª and there passed²° by¹ a wildª beastª that¹ [was] in Lebanon,ª and trode downª°¹ the thistle.ª" {2Kg 14:9} + "And say,ª° Thus¹ saithª° the Lordª GOD;ª A greatª eagleª with greatª wings,ª longwinged,ªª fullª of feathers,ª which¹ had divers colours,ª cameª° unto¹ Lebanon,ª and tookª°¹ the highest branchª of the cedar:ª ... Yea, behold,¹ [being] planted,ª° shall it prosper?ª° shall it not¹ utterly²° wither,ª° when the eastª windª touchethª° it? it shall witherª° in¹ the furrowsª where it grew.ª" {Ezk 17:3-10} + "Thus [were] the visionsª of mine headª inª my bed;ª I saw,ªª°° and beholdª a treeª in the midstª of the earth,ª and the heightª thereof [was] great.ª ... Thisª dreamª Iª kingª Nebuchadnezzarª have seen.ª° Now thou,ª O Belteshazzar,ª declareª° the interpretationª thereof, forasmuch asª¹¹ allª the wiseª [men] of my kingdomª are not² ableª°¹ to make knownª° unto me the interpretation:ª but thouª [art] able;ª° for¹ the spiritª of the holyª godsª [is] in thee." {Dan 4:10-18}
