- the sword:
- The word cherev, "sword," necessarily implied, and rightly supplied by our venerable translators from "And the threeª companiesª blewª° the trumpets,ª and brakeª° the pitchers,ª and heldª° the lampsª in their leftª hands,ª and the trumpetsª in their rightª handsª to blowª° [withal]: and they cried,ª° The swordª of the LORD,ª and of Gideon.ª" {Jdg 7:20}, is found in this place, in the Chaldee, Syriac, and Arabic, and in eight manuscripts; and evidently appears to be genuine. "And all¹ this¹ assemblyª shall knowª° that¹ the LORDª savethª° not¹ with swordª and spear:ª for¹ the battleª [is] the LORD'S,ª and he will giveª° you into our hands.ª" {1Sm 17:47} + "And he said,ª° Hearkenª° ye, all¹ Judah,ª and ye inhabitantsª° of Jerusalem,ª and thou kingª Jehoshaphat,ª Thus¹ saithª° the LORDª unto you, Be not afraidª°¹¹ nor¹ dismayedª° by reason² of¹¹ this¹ greatª multitude;ª for¹ the battleª [is] not¹ yours, but¹ God's.ª ... Ye shall not¹ [need] to fightª° in thisª [battle]: set²° yourselves,¹ standª° ye [still], and seeª°¹ the salvationª of the LORDª with¹ you, O Judahª and Jerusalem:ª fearª° not,¹ nor¹ be dismayed;ª° to morrowª go outª° againstª them: for the LORDª [will be] with¹ you." {2Ch 20:15-17}
