- an ox goad:
- This implement, Mr. Maundrell informs us, in Palestine and Syria is of an extraordinary size. He measured several, and "found them about eight feet long; and at the bigger end about six inches in circumference. They were armed at the lesser end with a sharp prickle for driving the oxen; and at the other end with a small paddle of iron, strong and massive, for cleansing the plough from the clay. In the hand of a powerful man such an instrument must be more dangerous and fatal than a sword." "And he foundª° a newª jawboneª of an ass,ª and put forthª° his hand,ª and tookª° it, and slewª° a thousandª menª therewith." {Jdg 15:15} + "Now there was no¹ smithª foundª° throughout all¹ the landª of Israel:ª for¹ the Philistinesª said,ª° Lest¹ the Hebrewsª makeª° [them] swordsª or¹ spears:ª ... So it came to pass¹ in the dayª of battle,ª that there was neither¹ swordª nor spearª foundª° in the handª of any¹ of the peopleª that¹ [were] with¹ Saulª and Jonathan:²¹ but with Saulª and with Jonathan²¹ his sonª was there found.ª°" {1Sm 13:19-22} + "And all¹ this¹ assemblyª shall knowª° that¹ the LORDª savethª° not¹ with swordª and spear:ª for¹ the battleª [is] the LORD'S,ª and he will giveª° you into our hands.ª" {1Sm 17:47} + "So Davidª prevailedª° overª the Philistineª with a slingª and with a stone,ª and smoteª°¹ the Philistine,ª and slewª° him; but [there was] no¹ swordª in the handª of David.ª" {1Sm 17:50} + "Forª Christª sentª° meª notª to baptize,ª° butª to preach the gospel:ª° notª withª wisdomª of words,ª lestª the¹ crossª of Christª should be made of none effect.ª°¹" {1Co 1:17}
