- lefthanded:
- Heb. shut of his right hand, This Hebrew phrase intimates that, either through disease or disuse, he made little or no use of the right hand, but of his left only, and so was the less fit for war, because he would most likely wield a dagger awkwardly. Yet God chose this left-handed man to be the minister of his retributive justice. It was God's right hand that gained Israel the victory, "For¹ they got²° not¹ the landª in possessionª° by their own sword,ª neither¹ did their own armª saveª° them: but¹ thy right hand,ª and thine arm,ª and the lightª of thy countenance,ª because¹ thou hadst a favourª° unto them." {Psa 44:3}; not the right hand of the instruments he employed. "Among all¹¹ this¹ peopleª [there were] sevenª hundredª chosenª° menª lefthanded;ªªª every one¹¹ could slingª° stonesª at¹ an hairª [breadth], and not¹ miss.ª°" {Jdg 20:16} + "[They were] armedª° with bows,ª and could use both the right handª° and the leftª° in [hurling] stonesª and [shooting] arrowsª out of a bow,ª [even] of Saul's² brethrenª¹¹ of Benjamin.ª¹" {1Ch 12:2}
