- From this exhortation of Joshua, we not only learn that the Israelites still retained some relics of idolatry, but to what gods they were attached.
1. Those whom their fathers worshipped on the other side of the food, or the river Euphrates, i.e., the gods of the Chaldeans, fire, light, the sun, etc.
2. Those of the Egyptians, Apis, Anubis, serpents, vegetables, etc.
3. Those of the Amorites, Moabites, Canaanites, etc., Baal-peor, Astarte, etc.
How astonishing is it, that after all that God had done for them, and all the miracles they had seen, there should still be found among them both idols and idolaters! "And Joshuaª saidª° unto¹ all¹ the people,ª Thus¹ saithª° the LORDª Godª of Israel,ª Your fathersª dweltª° on the other sideª of the floodª in old time,ª¹ [even] Terah,ª the fatherª of Abraham,ª and the fatherª of Nachor:ª and they servedª° otherª gods.ª" {Jsh 24:2} + "Now¹ therefore put away,ª° [said he], the¹ strangeª godsª which¹ [are] amongª you, and inclineª°¹ your heartª unto¹ the LORDª Godª of Israel.ª" {Jsh 24:23} + "Then Jacobª saidª° unto¹ his household,ª and to¹ all¹ that¹ [were] with¹ him, Put awayª°¹ the strangeª godsª that¹ [are] among¹ you,² and be clean,ª° and changeª° your garments:ª" {Gen 35:2} + "Thou shalt have¹ no¹ otherª godsª before¹¹ me.² ... Thou shalt not¹ makeª° unto thee any graven image,ª or any¹ likenessª [of any thing] thatª [is] in heavenª above,ª¹ or that¹ [is] in the earthª beneath,¹¹ or that¹ [is] in the waterª under¹¹ the earth:ª" {Exd 20:3-4} + "And they shall no¹ more¹ offerª°¹ their sacrificesª unto devils,ª afterª whom¹ they¹ have gone a whoring.ª° This¹ shall be¹ a statuteª for everª unto them throughout their generations.ª" {Lev 17:7} + "Which¹ thou hast commandedª° byª thy servantsª the prophets,ª saying,ª° The land,ª unto which¹ ye¹ goª° to possessª° it, is an uncleanª landª with the filthinessª of the peopleª of the lands,ª with their abominations,ª which¹ have filledª° it from one endª¹ to¹ anotherª with their uncleanness.ª" {Ezr 9:11} + "But I saidª° unto¹ their childrenª in the wilderness,ª Walk²°¹ ye not¹ in the statutesª of your fathers,ª neither¹ observeª° their judgments,ª nor¹ defile²° yourselves¹ with their idols:ª" {Ezk 20:18} + "Have ye offeredª° unto me sacrificesª and offeringsª in the wildernessª fortyª years,ª O houseª of Israel?ª ... But ye have borneª°¹ the tabernacleª of your Moloch²¹ and Chiunª your images,ª the starª of your god,ª which¹ ye madeª° to yourselves." {Ams 5:25-26} |
