- Ed:
- i.e. a witness, The word witness, or testimony, is not found in the common editions of the Hebrew Bible; and is supplied in Italics by our venerable translators, at least in our modern copies; for in the first edition of this translation, it stands in the text without any note of this kind; but it is found in several of Kennicott's and De Rossi's manuscripts, and also in the Syriac and Arabic. Several also of the early printed editions of the Hebrew Bible have the word ed, either in the text or in the margin; and it must be allowed to be necessary to complete the sense. It is very probable that an inscription was put on this altar, signifying the purpose for which it was erected. Thus was this affair most happily terminated. "But¹ [that] it¹ [may be] a witnessª between¹ us, and you, and our generationsª afterª us, that we might doª°¹ the serviceª of the LORDª beforeª him with our burnt offerings,ª and with our sacrifices,ª and with our peace offerings;ª that your childrenª may not¹ sayª° to our childrenª in time to come,ª Ye have no¹ partª in the LORD.ª" {Jsh 22:27} + "And Joshuaª saidª° unto¹ all¹ the people,ª Behold,¹ this¹ stoneª shall be¹ a witnessª unto us; for¹ it¹ hath heardª°¹ all¹ the wordsª of the LORDª which¹ he spakeª° unto¹ us: it shall be¹ therefore a witnessª unto you, lest¹ ye denyª° your God.ª" {Jsh 24:27} + "And when all¹ the peopleª sawª° [it], they fellª° on¹ their faces:ª and they said,ª° The LORD,ª he¹ [is] the God;ª the LORD,ª he¹ [is] the God.ª" {1Kg 18:39} + "Ye¹ [are] my witnesses,ª saithª° the LORD,ª and my servantª whom¹ I have chosen:ª° that¹ ye may knowª° and believeª° me, and understandª° that¹ I¹ [am] he:¹ beforeª me there was no¹ Godª formed,ª° neither¹ shall there be¹ afterª me." {Isa 43:10} + "Thenª saithª° Jesusª unto him,ª Get thee hence,ª° Satan:ª forª it is written,ª° Thou shalt worshipª° the Lordª thyª God,ª andª himª onlyª shalt thou serve.ª°" {Mtt 4:10}
