- This and the following verse are wholly omitted by the Masora, and many Hebrew Bibles which are esteemed very highly; though, without them, neither the twelve cities of the Merarites in particular ("So all¹ the citiesª for the childrenª of Merariª by their families,ª which were remainingª° of the familiesª¹ of the Levites,ª were¹ [by] their lotª twelveªª cities.ª" {Jsh 21:40}), nor the forty-eight Levitical cities in general ("All¹ the citiesª of the Levitesª withinª the possessionª of the childrenª of Israelª [were] fortyª and eightª citiesª with their suburbs.ª" {Jsh 21:41}), nor the six cities of refuge, can be made up. But these two verses, are thus absolutely necessary for the truth and consistency of this chapter, are happily preserved in no less than 149 manuscripts collated by Dr. Kennicott, and upwards of 40 collated by De Rossi. "¹ Dimnahª with¹ her suburbs,ª¹ Nahalalª with¹ her suburbs;ª fourª cities.ª" {Jsh 21:35}
