- this was the:
- The borders of this tribe on the north were the same as those of Ephraim on the south, and his southern boundaries the same as the northern borders of Judah; but drawn from west to east, instead of from east to west ("[This] then was¹ the lotª of the tribeª of the childrenª of Judahª by their families;ª [even] to¹ the borderª of Edomª the wildernessª of Zinª southwardª [was] the uttermost partª¹ of the south coast.ª ... And the westª borderª [was] to the greatª sea,ª and the coastª [thereof]. This¹ [is] the coastª of the childrenª of Judahª round aboutª according to their families.ª" {Jsh 15:1-12} + "And the lotª of the childrenª of Josephª fellª° from Jordanª¹ by Jericho,ª unto the waterª of Jerichoª on the east,ª to the wildernessª that goeth upª° from Jerichoª¹ throughout mountª Bethel,ª" {Jsh 16:1}). As the inheritance of Benjamin did not extend to the Mediterranean sea, and no other sea or lake is known to have been in those parts, perhaps this depression, "compassed the corner of the sea southward," ("And the borderª was drawnª° [thence], and compassedª° the cornerª of the seaª southward,ª from¹ the hillª that¹ [lieth] beforeª¹ Bethhoronª southward;ª and the goings outª thereof were¹ at¹ Kirjathbaal,ª which¹ [is] Kirjathjearim,ª a cityª of the childrenª of Judah:ª this¹ [was] the westª quarter.ª" {Jsh 18:14}), should be rendered, "made a circuit on the side next the sea towards the south;" for it seems to connect the northern border, in the preceding verses, with the southern which follows.
