- Bethhoron:
- Eusebius says that the two Beth-horons were twelve miles from Jerusalem, towards Nicopolis or Emmaus. Of which the one, called upper Beth-horon, from its situation, was built (rebuilt) by Solomon, and the other, called nether Beth-horon, was given to the Levites. Josephus places Beth-oron about 100 furlongs from Jerusalem. Dr. Clarke mentions an Arab village called Bethoor, about twelve miles from Jerusalem, a small distance from Rama, which he supposes, from its situation on a hill, to be Beth-horon the upper. "And the borderª went overª° from thence¹¹ toward Luz,ª to¹ the sideª of Luz,ª which¹ [is] Bethel,ª southward;ª and the borderª descendedª° to Atarothadar,ª near¹ the hillª that¹ [lieth] on the south sideª¹ of the netherª Bethhoron.ª" {Jsh 18:13} + "And this¹ [is] the reasonª of the levyª which¹ kingª Solomonª raised;ª° for to buildª°¹ the houseª of the LORD,ª and his own house,ª and Millo,ª and the wallª of Jerusalem,ª and Hazor,ª and Megiddo,ª and Gezer.ª ... And Solomonª builtª°¹ Gezer,ª and Bethhoronª the nether,ª" {1Kg 9:15-17} + "(And his daughterª [was] Sherah,ª who builtª°¹ Bethhoronª the nether,ª and the upper,ª and Uzzensherah.)ª" {1Ch 7:24} + "And their possessionsª and habitationsª [were], Bethelª and the townsª thereof, and eastwardª Naaran,ª and westwardª Gezer,ª with the townsª thereof; Shechemª also and the townsª thereof, unto¹ Gazaª and the townsª thereof:" {1Ch 7:28} + "Also he builtª°¹ Bethhoronª the upper,ª and Bethhoronª the nether,ª fencedª cities,ª with walls,ª gates,ª and bars;ª" {2Ch 8:5}
