- five lords:
- "[Namely], fiveª lordsª of the Philistines,ª and all¹ the Canaanites,ª and the Sidonians,ª and the Hivitesª that dweltª° in mountª Lebanon,ª from mountª¹ Baalhermonª unto¹ the entering inª° of Hamath.ª" {Jdg 3:3} + "Then saidª° they, What¹ [shall be] the trespass offeringª which¹ we shall returnª° to him? They answered,ª° Fiveª goldenª emerods,ª²° and fiveª goldenª mice,ª [according to] the numberª of the lordsª of the Philistines:ª for¹ oneª plagueª [was] on you all,¹ and on your lords.ª" {1Sm 6:4} + "And when the fiveª lordsª of the Philistinesª had seenª° [it], they returnedª° to Ekronª the same¹ day.ª ... Woeª unto the inhabitantsª° of the seaª coast,ª the nationª of the Cherethites!ª the wordª of the LORDª [is] against¹ you; O Canaan,ª the landª of the Philistines,ª I will even destroyª° thee, that there shall be no¹¹ inhabitant.ª°" {Zph 2:4-5}; The Philistine were not descended from Canaan, but from Mizraim, the son of Ham; (compare "And the sonsª of Ham;ª Cush,ª and Mizraim,ª and Phut,ª and Canaan.ª" {Gen 10:6} with "Nevertheless the childrenª of Israelª expelledª° not¹¹ the Geshurites,ª nor the Maachathites:ª but the Geshuritesª and the Maachathitesª dwellª° amongª the Israelitesª until¹ this¹ day.ª" {Jsh 13:13}); yet they were numbered with the Canaanites in this distribution.
