- Debir:
- Debir was situated in the south of the tribe of Judah, near Hebron. The expression of Joshua's returning to Debir, probably denotes, that having carried his conquests in the southern parts as far as Gaza ("And Joshuaª smoteª° them from Kadeshbarneaª¹ even unto¹ Gaza,ª and all¹ the countryª of Goshen,ª even unto¹ Gibeon.ª" {Jsh 10:41}), which was in the south-west angle of Canaan, he then marched back to besiege Debir. "The kingª of Debir,ª one;ª the kingª of Geder,ª one;ª" {Jsh 12:13} + "And he went upª° thence¹¹ to¹ the inhabitantsª° of Debir:ª and the nameª of Debirª beforeª [was] Kirjathsepher.ª" {Jsh 15:15} + "And Dannah,ª and Kirjathsannah,ª which¹ [is] Debir,ª" {Jsh 15:49} + "And Holonª with¹ her suburbs,ª and Debirª with¹ her suburbs,ª" {Jsh 21:15} + "And from thence¹¹ he went²°¹ against¹ the inhabitantsª° of Debir:ª and the nameª of Debirª beforeª [was] Kirjathsepher:ª ... And she saidª° unto him, Giveª° me a blessing:ª for¹ thou hast givenª° me a southª land;ª giveª° me also springsª of water.ª And Calebª gaveª° her¹ the upperª springsª and the netherª springs.ª" {Jdg 1:11-15}
