- This must refer to the women, children, and old persons left behind; for it seems that all the effective men had sallied out when they imagined the Israelites had fled ("And all¹ the peopleª that¹ [were] in Aiª°² were called²° together¹ to pursueª° afterª them: and they pursuedª° afterª Joshua,ª and were drawn awayª° from¹ the city.ª" {Jsh 8:16}). "And the LORDª deliveredª° it also,¹ and the kingª thereof, into the handª of Israel;ª and he smoteª° it with the edgeª of the sword,ª and all¹ the soulsª that¹ [were] therein; he letª° none¹ remainª in it; but didª° unto the kingª thereof as¹ he didª° unto the kingª of Jericho.ª ...
