"And the threeª companiesª blewª ° the trumpets,ª and brakeª ° the pitchers,ª and heldª ° the lampsª in their leftª hands,ª and the trumpetsª in their rightª handsª to blowª ° [withal]: and they cried,ª ° The swordª of the LORD,ª and of Gideon.ª ... and the wall:
The words wenaphelah chomath hair tachteyha, are literally, "and the wall of the city shall fall down under itself;" which appears simply to mean, that the wall shall fall down from its very foundation; which was probably the case in every part, though large breaches in different places might have been amply sufficient first to admit the armed men, after whom the host might enter to destroy the city. There is no ground for the supposition that the walls sunk into the earth. "And the fortressª of the high fortª of thy wallsª shall he bring down,ª ° lay low,ª ° [and] bringª ° to the ground,ª [even] to¹ the dust.ª" {Isa 25:12} + "And there shall be¹ upon¹ every¹ highª mountain,ª and upon¹ every¹ highª ° hill,ª riversª [and] streamsª of watersª in the dayª of the greatª slaughter,ª when the towersª fall.ª °" {Isa 30:25} + "(Forª the¹ weaponsª of ourª warfareª [are] notª carnal,ª butª mightyª through Godª toª the pulling downª of strong holds;)ª ... Casting downª ° imaginations,ª andª everyª high thingª that exalteth itselfª ° againstª the¹ knowledgeª of God,ª andª bringing into captivityª ° everyª thoughtª toª the¹ obedienceª of Christ;ª" {2Co 10:4-5} + "By faithª the¹ wallsª of Jerichoª fell down,ª ° after they were compassed² ° aboutª ¹ sevenª days.² ¹" {Hbr 11:30}
