{Joshua 4:9} And Joshua 3091 set up 6965 z8689 twelve 8147 6240 stones 68 in the midst 8432 of Jordan, 3383 in the place x8478 where the feet 7272 of the priests 3548 which bare 5375 z8802 the ark 727 of the covenant 1285 stood: 4673 and they are x1961 there x8033 unto x5704 this x2088 day. 3117
set up twelve:
"And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Moses,ª Come upª° to¹ me into the mount,ª and be¹ there:¹ and I will giveª° thee¹ tablesª of stone,ª and a law,ª and commandmentsª which¹ I have written;ª° that thou mayest teachª° them." {Exd 24:12} + "And the stonesª shall be¹ with¹ the namesª of the childrenª of Israel,ª twelve,ªª according to¹ their names,ª [like] the engravingsª of a signet;ª every oneª with¹ his nameª shall they be¹ according to the twelveªª tribes.ª" {Exd 28:21} + "And Elijahª tookª° twelveªª stones,ª according to the numberª of the tribesª of the sonsª of Jacob,ª unto¹ whom¹ the wordª of the LORDª came,¹ saying,ª° Israelª shall be¹ thy name:ª" {1Kg 18:31} + "The worksª of the LORDª [are] great,ª sought outª° of all¹ them that have pleasureª therein. ... He hath madeª° his wonderful worksª° to be remembered:ª the LORDª [is] graciousª and full of compassion.ª" {Psa 111:2-4}
and they are there:
These words might be written by Joshua at the close of his life, or perhaps be added by some later prophet. It seems from this verse, that there were two sorts of stones erected as a memorial of this great event. Twelve at Gilgal ("And those¹ twelveªª stones,ª which¹ they took¹ out²° of¹ Jordan,ª did Joshuaª pitchª° in Gilgal.ª" {Jsh 4:20}), and twelve in the bed of the Jordan; which last might have been placed on a base of strong stone work, so high as always to be visible, and serve to mark the very spot where the priests stood with the ark. Drs. Kennicott and Shuckford, however, would read here with the Syriac, mittoch, "from the midst," instead of bethoch, "in the midst;" and render, "And Joshua took up the twelve stones (taken) from the midst of Jordan," etc. But this reading is unsupported by any manuscript yet collated; and it appears wholly unnecessary. "And he calledª° it Shebah:ª therefore¹¹ the nameª of the cityª [is] Beershebaª unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {Gen 26:33} + "And he buriedª° him in a valleyª in the landª of Moab,ª over againstª Bethpeor:ª but no¹ manª knowethª° of¹ his sepulchreª unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {Deu 34:6} + "And the manª went²°¹ into the landª of the Hittites,ª and builtª° a city,ª and calledª° the nameª thereof Luz:ª which¹ [is] the nameª thereof unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {Jdg 1:26} + "And it was¹ [so] from that dayª¹¹ forward,ª that he madeª° it a statuteª and an ordinanceª for Israelª unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {1Sm 30:25} + "And the Beerothitesª fledª° to Gittaim,ª and were¹ sojournersª° there¹ until¹ this¹ day.)ª" {2Sm 4:3} + "And they drew outª° the stavesª [of the ark], that the endsª of the stavesª were seenª° from¹ the arkª beforeª¹ the oracle;ª but they were not¹ seenª° without.ª And there¹ it is¹ unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {2Ch 5:9} + "Whereforeª thatª fieldª was called,ª° The fieldª of blood,ª untoª this day.ª" {Mtt 27:8} + "Soª they¹ tookª° the¹ money,ª and didª° asª they were taught:ª° andª thisª sayingª is commonly reportedª° amongª the Jewsª untilª this day.ª" {Mtt 28:15}
