- bring thee into Egypt:
- This verse seems especially to point out an event, which took place subsequently to the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus, and the desolation made by Hadrian. Numbers of the captives were sent by sea into Egypt (as well as into other countries), and sold for slaves at a vile price, and for the meanest offices; and many thousands were left to perish from want; for the multitude was so great, that purchasers could not be found for them all at any price! "But¹ he shall not¹ multiplyª° horsesª to himself, nor¹ cause¹ the peopleª to returnª° to Egypt,ª to the end that¹ he should multiplyª° horses:ª forasmuch as the LORDª hath saidª° unto you, Ye shall henceforthª° returnª° no¹ more¹ that¹ way.ª" {Deu 17:16} + "So they came²° into¹ the landª of Egypt:ª for¹ they obeyedª° not¹ the voiceª of the LORD:ª thus cameª° they [even] to¹ Tahpanhes.ª" {Jer 43:7} + "And I will takeª°¹ the remnantª of Judah,ª that¹ have setª° their facesª to go²° into¹ the landª of Egyptª to sojournª° there,¹ and they shall all¹ be consumed,ª° [and] fallª° in the landª of Egypt;ª they shall [even] be consumedª° by the swordª [and] by the famine:ª they shall die,ª° from the leastª¹ even unto¹ the greatest,ª by the swordª and by the famine:ª and they shall be¹ an execration,ª [and] an astonishment,ª and a curse,ª and a reproach.ª" {Jer 44:12} + "They sacrificeª° fleshª [for] the sacrificesª of mine offerings,ª and eatª° [it; but] the LORDª acceptethª° them not;¹ now¹ will he rememberª° their iniquity,ª and visitª° their sins:ª they¹ shall returnª° to Egypt.ª" {Hsa 8:13} + "They shall not¹ dwellª° in the LORD'Sª land;ª but Ephraimª shall returnª° to Egypt,ª and they shall eatª° uncleanª [things] in Assyria.ª" {Hsa 9:3}
