- bring a nation:
- Though the Chaldeans are frequently described under the figure of an eagle, yet these verses especially predict the desolations brought on the Jews by the Romans; who came from a country far more distant than Chaldea; whose conquests were as rapid as the eagle's flight, and whose standard bore this very figure; who spake a language to which the Jews were then entire strangers, being wholly unlike the Hebrew, of which the Chaldee was merely a dialect; whose appearance and victories were terrible; and whose yoke was a yoke of iron; and the havoc which they made tremendous. "And shipsª [shall come] from the coastª¹ of Chittim,ª and shall afflictª° Asshur,ª and shall afflictª° Eber,ª and he¹ also¹ shall perishª for ever.ª" {Num 24:24} + "And he will lift upª° an ensignª to the nationsª from far,ª¹ and will hissª° unto them from the endª¹ of the earth:ª and, behold,¹ they shall comeª° with speedª swiftly:ª ... And in that¹ dayª they shall roarª° against¹ them like the roaringª of the sea:ª and if [one] lookª° unto the land,ª behold¹ darknessª [and] sorrow,ª and the lightª is darkenedª° in the heavensª thereof." {Isa 5:26-30} + "Lo,¹ I will bringª° a nationª upon¹ you from far,ª¹ O houseª of Israel,ª saithª° the LORD:ª it¹ [is] a mightyª nation,ª it¹ [is] an ancientª¹ nation,ª a nationª whose languageª thou knowestª° not,¹ neither¹ understandestª° what¹ they say.ª° ... And they shall eat upª° thine harvest,ª and thy bread,ª [which] thy sonsª and thy daughtersª should eat:ª° they shall eat upª° thy flocksª and thine herds:ª they shall eat upª° thy vinesª and thy fig trees:ª they shall impoverishª° thy fencedª cities,ª wherein¹ thou²¹ trustedst,ª° with the sword.ª" {Jer 5:15-17} + "My Godª hath sentª° his angel,ª and hath shutª° the lions'ª mouths,ª that they have notª hurtª° me: forasmuch asªª¹ beforeª him innocencyª was foundª° in me; and alsoª beforeª thee, O king,ª have I doneª° noª hurt.ª ... Thenª was the king² exceeding² gladª°¹¹ for¹ him,² and commandedª° that they should take²° Daniel² upª°¹ out ofª the den.ª So Danielª was taken upª° out ofª the den,ª and no² mannerª¹ of hurtª was foundª° upon him, because¹ he believedª° in his God.ª" {Dan 6:22-23} + "And afterª threescoreª and twoª weeksª shall Messiahª be cut off,ª° but not¹ for himself: and the peopleª of the princeª that shall comeª° shall destroyª° the cityª and the sanctuary;ª and the endª thereof [shall be] with a flood,ª and unto¹ the endª of the warª desolationsª° are determined.ª°" {Dan 9:26} + "For,¹ lo,¹ I raise upª°¹ the Chaldeans,ª [that] bitterª and hastyª° nation,ª which shall marchª° through the breadthª of the land,ª to possessª° the dwellingplacesª [that are] not¹ theirs. ... They¹ [are] terribleª and dreadful:ª° their judgmentª and their dignityª shall proceedª° of¹ themselves." {Hab 1:6-7} + "Forª the daysª shall comeª° uponª thee,ª thatª thineª enemiesª shall cast²° a trench² aboutª°¹ thee,²¹ andª compass²° thee² round,ª°¹ andª keep²° thee² inª°¹ on every side,ª ... Andª shall lay²° thee² even with the ground,ª°¹ andª thyª childrenª withinª thee;ª andª they shall²° notª leaveª° inª theeª one stone² upon² another;ª¹ becauseªª thou knewestª° notª the¹ timeª of thyª visitation.ª" {Lke 19:43-44}
