{Deuteronomy 27:12} These x428 shall stand 5975 z8799 upon x5921 mount 2022 Gerizim 1630 to bless 1288 z8763 x853 the people, 5971 when ye are come over 5674 z8800 x853 Jordan; 3383 Simeon, 8095 and Levi, 3878 and Judah, 3063 and Issachar, 3485 and Joseph, 3130 and Benjamin: 1144
upon mount Gerizim:
Mount Gerizim and mount Ebal being only separated by a narrow valley, not above a furlong broad, what was spoken with a loud voice on the one might be heard on the other (see note on "And when they toldª° [it] to Jotham,ª he went²°¹ and stoodª° in the topª of mountª Gerizim,ª and lifted upª° his voice,ª and cried,ª° and saidª° unto them, Hearkenª° unto¹ me, ye menª of Shechem,ª that Godª may hearkenª° unto¹ you." {Jdg 9:7}). It is probable, however, that the particle âl should be rendered by, as it frequently signifies; for when this direction was reduced to practice ("And all¹ Israel,ª and their elders,ª and officers,ª° and their judges,ª° stoodª° on this side¹¹ the arkª and on that side¹¹ before¹ the priestsª the Levites,ª which bareª° the arkª of the covenantª of the LORD,ª as well the stranger,ª as he that was born² among them;¹ halfª of them overª againstª mountª Gerizim,ª and halfª of them over¹ againstª mountª Ebal;ª as¹ Mosesª the servantª of the LORDª had commandedª° before,ª that they should blessª°¹ the peopleª of Israel.ª" {Jsh 8:33}), it seems that the people did not stand on the mountains, but over against them in the plain. But the Talmud says, that six tribes went up on each, while the priest and Levites and the ark remained beneath. "Behold,ª° I¹ setª° beforeª you this dayª a blessingª and a curse;ª ... And it shall come to pass,¹ when¹ the LORDª thy Godª hath brought thee inª° unto¹ the landª whither¹¹ thou¹ goestª° to possessª° it, that thou shalt putª°¹ the blessingª upon¹ mountª Gerizim,ª and the curseª upon¹ mountª Ebal.ª" {Deu 11:26-29} + "And all¹ Israel,ª and their elders,ª and officers,ª° and their judges,ª° stoodª° on this side¹¹ the arkª and on that side¹¹ before¹ the priestsª the Levites,ª which bareª° the arkª of the covenantª of the LORD,ª as well the stranger,ª as he that was born² among them;¹ halfª of them overª againstª mountª Gerizim,ª and halfª of them over¹ againstª mountª Ebal;ª as¹ Mosesª the servantª of the LORDª had commandedª° before,ª that they should blessª°¹ the peopleª of Israel.ª ... And afterwardª¹ he readª°¹ all¹ the wordsª of the law,ª the blessingsª and cursings,ª according to all¹ that is writtenª° in the bookª of the law.ª" {Jsh 8:33-34} + "And when they toldª° [it] to Jotham,ª he went²°¹ and stoodª° in the topª of mountª Gerizim,ª and lifted upª° his voice,ª and cried,ª° and saidª° unto them, Hearkenª° unto¹ me, ye menª of Shechem,ª that Godª may hearkenª° unto¹ you." {Jdg 9:7}
Simeon:
"And she conceivedª° again,¹ and bareª° a son;ª and said,ª° Because¹ the LORDª hath heardª° that¹ I¹ [was] hated,ª° he hath therefore givenª° me¹ this¹ [son] also:¹ and she calledª° his nameª Simeon.ª ... And she conceivedª° again,¹ and bareª° a son:ª and she said,ª° Nowª will I praiseª°¹ the LORD:ª therefore¹¹ she calledª° his nameª Judah;ª and leftª° bearing.ª°¹" {Gen 29:33-35} + "And Leahª said,ª° Godª hath givenª° me my hire,ª becauseª I have givenª° my maidenª to my husband:ª and she calledª° his nameª Issachar.ª" {Gen 30:18} + "And she calledª°¹ his nameª Joseph;ª and said,ª° The LORDª shall addª° to me anotherª son.ª" {Gen 30:24} + "And it came to pass,¹ as her soulª was in departing,ª° (for¹ she died)ª° that she calledª° his nameª Benoni:ª but his fatherª calledª° him Benjamin.ª" {Gen 35:18}
