- he that is hanged is accursed of God:
- Heb. the curse of God, That is, it is the highest degree of reproach that can attach to a man, and proclaims him under the curse of God as much as any external punishment can. They that see him thus hanging between heaven and earth, will conclude him abandoned of both, and unworthy of either. Bp. Patrick observes, that this passage is applied to the death of Christ; not only because he bare our sins and was exposed to shame, as these malefactors were that were accursed of God, but because he was in the evening taken down from the cursed tree and buried (and that by the particular care of the Jews, with an eye to this law, "The¹ Jewsª therefore,ª becauseª it wasª°° the preparation,ª that²°¹ the¹ bodiesª should²° not²¹ remainª° uponª the¹ crossª onª the¹ sabbath day,ª (forª thatª sabbath¹ day²¹ wasª° an high² day,)²¹ besoughtª° Pilateª thatª theirª legsª might be broken,ª° andª [that] they might be taken away.ª°" {Jhn 19:31}), in token, that now the guilt being removed, the law was satisfied, as it was when the malefactors had hanged till sun-set. It demanded no more. Then he, and those that are his, ceased to be a curse. And as the land of Israel was pure and clean when the body was buried, so the church is washed and cleansed by the complete satisfaction which Christ thus made. "Neither¹ shalt thou bringª° an abominationª into¹ thine house,ª lest thou be¹ a cursed thingª like it:¹ [but] thou shalt utterly²° detestª° it, and thou shalt utterly²° abhorª° it; for¹ it¹ [is] a cursed thing.ª" {Deu 7:26} + "And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Moses,ª Takeª°¹ all¹ the headsª of the people,ª and hang them upª°¹ before² the LORDª against¹ the sun,ª that the fierceª angerª of the LORDª may be turned awayª° from Israel.ª¹" {Num 25:4} + "Therefore the childrenª of Israelª couldª° not¹ standª° beforeª their enemies,ª° [but] turnedª° [their] backsª beforeª their enemies,ª° because¹ they were¹ accursed:ª neither¹ will I be¹ with¹ you any more,ª° exceptª¹ ye destroyª° the accursedª from amongª¹ you." {Jsh 7:12} + "Let sevenª men²¹ of his sonsª¹ be deliveredª° unto us, and we will hang¹ them up²° unto the LORDª in Gibeahª of Saul,ª [whom] the LORDª did choose.ª And the kingª said,ª° I¹ will giveª° [them]." {2Sm 21:6} + "Forª Iª could wishª° that myself²¹ wereª° accursedª fromª Christª forª myª brethren,ª myª kinsmenª accordingª to the flesh:ª" {Rom 9:3} + "Christª hath redeemedª° usª fromª the¹ curseª of the¹ law,ª being madeª° a curseª forª us:ª forª it is written,ª° Cursedª [is] every oneª that hangethª° onª a tree:ª" {Gal 3:13} + "If any manª loveª° notª the¹ Lordª Jesusª Christ,ª let him beª° Anathemaª Maranatha.ª" {1Co 16:22} + "Forª he hath madeª° him [to be] sinª forª us,ª who² knewª° noª sin;ª thatª weª might be madeª° the righteousnessª of Godª inª him.ª" {2Co 5:21}
