- the unclean:
- "If¹ the placeª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª hath chosenª° to putª° his nameª there¹ be too farª° from¹ thee, then thou shalt killª° of thy herdª¹ and of thy flock,ª¹ which¹ the LORDª hath givenª° thee, as¹ I have commandedª° thee, and thou shalt eatª° in thy gatesª whatsoever¹ thy soulª lusteth after.ª ... Even¹ as¹¹ the roebuckª and the hartª is eaten,ª° so¹ thou shalt eatª° them: the uncleanª and the cleanª shall eatª° [of] them alike.ª" {Deu 12:21-22} + "The hart,ª and the roebuck,ª and the fallow deer,ª and the wild goat,ª and the pygarg,ª and the wild ox,ª and the chamois.ª" {Deu 14:5} + "Thou shalt eatª° it within thy gates:ª the uncleanª and the cleanª [person shall eat it] alike,ª as the roebuck,ª and as the hart.ª ... Only¹ thou shalt not¹ eatª°¹ the bloodª thereof; thou shalt pourª° it upon¹ the groundª as water.ª" {Deu 15:22-23} + "What² man² soeverª [there be] of the houseª¹ of Israel,ª that¹ killethª° an ox,ª or¹ lamb,ª or¹ goat,ª in the camp,ª or¹ that¹ killethª° [it] out² of¹¹ the camp,ª ... To the end¹ that¹ the childrenª of Israelª may bringª°¹ their sacrifices,ª which¹ they¹ offerª° in¹ the openª field,ª even that they may bringª° them unto the LORD,ª unto¹ the doorª of the tabernacleª of the congregation,ª unto¹ the priest,ª and offerª° them [for] peaceª offeringsª unto the LORD.ª" {Lev 17:3-5}; Of the propriety of eating clean animals there could be no question, but the blood must be poured out. Yet there were cases when they might kill and eat in all their gates such as the roebuck and the hart, or all clean wild beasts; for these being taken in hunting, and frequently shot by arrows, their blood could not be poured out at the altar
