Moses seems here to have addressed himself particularly to the elders, who had in their youth witnessed the wonderful works which Jehovah had wrought both for them and among them; and who were bound to remember them for their own warning, and testify them to the rising generation who had not been eye-witnesses. "And it shall be,¹ if¹ thou do at all²° forgetª°¹ the LORDª thy God,ª and walkª° afterª otherª gods,ª and serveª° them, and worshipª° them, I testifyª° against you this dayª that¹ ye shall surely²° perish.ª°" {Deu 8:19} + "Ye¹ standª° this dayª all¹ of you beforeª the LORDª your God;ª your captainsª of your tribes,ª your elders,ª and your officers,ª° [with] all¹ the menª of Israel,ª" {Deu 29:10} + "That thy trustª may be¹ in the LORD,ª I have made knownª° to thee this day,ª even¹ to thee.¹" {Prv 22:19} + "Having²° thereforeª obtainedª° helpª ofª God,ª I continueª° untoª thisª day,ª witnessingª° bothª to smallª andª great,ª sayingª° none¹ other things²¹ than² those whichªª the¹ prophetsª andª Mosesª did sayª° shouldª° come:ª°" {Act 26:22}
the chastisement:
"And thou shalt rememberª°¹ all¹ the wayª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª led²°¹ thee these¹ fortyª yearsª in the wilderness,ª to¹ humbleª° thee, [and] to proveª° thee, to knowª°¹ what¹ [was] in thine heart,ª whether thou wouldest keepª° his commandments,ª or¹ no.¹ ... Thou shalt also considerª° inª thine heart,ª that,¹ as¹ a manª chastenethª°¹ his son,ª [so] the LORDª thy Godª chastenethª° thee." {Deu 8:2-5}
his greatness:
"And ye said,ª° Behold,¹ the LORDª our Godª hath shewedª° us¹ his gloryª and his greatness,ª and we have heardª° his voiceª out of the midstª¹ of the fire:ª we have seenª° this¹ dayª that¹ Godª doth talkª° with¹ man,ª and he liveth.ª°" {Deu 5:24} + "I prayedª° therefore unto¹ the LORD,ª and said,ª° O Lordª GOD,ª destroyª° not¹ thy peopleª and thine inheritance,ª which¹ thou hast redeemedª° through thy greatness,ª which¹ thou hast brought forthª° out of Egyptª¹ with a mightyª hand.ª" {Deu 9:26}
his mighty:
"The greatª temptationsª which¹ thine eyesª saw,ª° and the signs,ª and the wonders,ª and the mightyª hand,ª and the stretched outª° arm,ª whereby¹ the LORDª thy Godª brought thee out:ª° so¹ shall the LORDª thy Godª doª° unto all¹ the peopleª of whom¹ thou¹ art afraid.ª²¹¹" {Deu 7:19}
