- the brook:
- This was the stream which flowed from the rock that Moses smote with his rod ("Behold,¹ I will standª° beforeª thee there¹ upon¹ the rockª in Horeb;ª and thou shalt smiteª° the rock,ª and there shall comeª° waterª out of¹ it, that the peopleª may drink.ª° And Mosesª didª° so¹ in the sightª of the eldersª of Israel.ª" {Exd 17:6}), and to which the Psalmist alludes in "He brought²° streams²° also out¹¹ of the rock,ª¹ and caused watersª to run downª° like rivers.ª ... Behold,¹ he smoteª° the rock,ª that the watersª gushed out,ª° and the streamsª overflowed;ª° canª° he giveª° breadª also?¹ can²° he provideª° fleshª for his people?ª" {Psa 78:16-20} + "He openedª° the rock,ª and the watersª gushed out;ª° they ranª° in the dry placesª [like] a river.ª" {Psa 105:41}. Philo relates, that upon Moses' striking the rock, the water poured out like a torrent, affording not only a sufficient quantity for allaying their present thirst, but to fill their water vessels, to carry with them on their journey.
