- thou mayest:
- As the Israelites were not yet sufficiently numerous to fill the whole land occupied by these nations; and as wild and ferocious animals might be expected to multiply where the place was but thinly peopled, therefore God informs them that their extermination from before them should be gradual. Haynes says, "The approaching to Cana, at the close of the day, as we did, is at once terrifying and dangerous. The surrounding country swarms with wild beasts, such as tigers, leopards, jackals, etc., whose cries and howling, I doubt not, would strike the boldest traveller, who had not been frequently in a like situation, with the deepest sense of horror." "I will not¹ drive them outª° from beforeª¹ thee in oneª year;ª lest¹ the landª become¹ desolate,ª and the beastª of the fieldª multiplyª against¹ thee. ... By littleª and littleª I will drive them outª° from beforeª¹ thee, until¹¹ thou be increased,ª° and inheritª°¹ the land.ª" {Exd 23:29-30} + "As for the Jebusitesª the inhabitantsª° of Jerusalem,ª the childrenª of Judahª couldª°°° not¹ drive them out:ª° but the Jebusitesª dwellª° with¹ the childrenª of Judahª at Jerusalemª unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {Jsh 15:63}
